ZyXEL Rolls Out Intelligent Gigabit Switches for Streaming Couch Potatoes

The networking gurus at ZyXEL Communications have home entertainment on the brain and announced a pair of five-port and eight-port gigabit switches specifically for that task. The new Aerobeam AVS105 and AVS108 switches automagically prioritize multimedia streams so if you're a Hulu or Netflix junkie, you can be assured of the best possible performance and quality, ZyXEL says.

"Today's home theaters include multiple devices that demand IP connectivity and utilize audio and video streaming services, such as Netflix, Hulu and YouTube," said Steven Joe , executive vice president for ZyXEL. "Our Aerobeam AV switches offer gigabit connectivity coupled with automated traffic prioritization for superior entertainment experience, and eliminate customer confusion during the set-up process. Just plug in your devices based on our color coding and sit back for a fantastic entertainment experience."

On-board intelligence is where the magic happens. According to ZyXEL, the switches monitor traffic in real time and are able to detect bandwidth and latency sensitive traffic such as SIP and streaming traffic. This results in better audio and video traffic, particularly on networks with multiple users all vying for bandwidth, ZyXEL claims.

The AVS105 and AVS018 will be available in March. No word yet on price.
