Who in their right mind would get this for 1k?

eastbayrae

LOL at $1k for that.

Even though I have my doubts about this being a "gaming console" even though it seems be advertised as such, it's quite impressive for such a small design. It would be neet to slap to the back of a monitor or sit up on a TV entertainment stand.

Hilarious - "Unfortunately, I can’t tell you what I know is coming because it’s not time to tell you."

Is this guy a fortune teller? Have a crystal ball? Nah... His company just created something that they don't know how to market. Ops... I let the cat out of the bag.

I was going to comment "the PC just won the console wars", but then I saw the price...yeah cool looking little rig, but a grand for those specs? Someone's smoking crack.

Looked cool but they hid that price in there, that killed it for me. I think I'll just make my own "SteamBox".

Looks cool, but the price is too high and I would never buy a first generation. Maybe down the road when the price is better(sub $300) and it's been thoroughly tested by the public.

Agreed. When I build a new desktop every few years, I work to find a sweet spot between price and performance. I never spend much more than $1000. So if I can get a fully functional rig for $1000, why would I pay $1000 for a gaming console?

"A quad core x86 processor,"... so, probably AMD?

avatar

basketcase87

Yes. It's supposed to be a Trinity chip.

Really? a 1000 bucks for an integrated Graphics card? No thank you.

I mean, who is interested in this product? Tech guys will much rather create their own box from scratch with that kind of budget and console gamers wont undestand the potential.

Sure form factor is nice but I dont see the appeal for any market.

Not only that but console warriors will balk at the price tag of $1,000 so there's no reason why they'd switch to this unit. I'm hoping other partners in the Steam Machines project will be of equal or greater spec at a more real-world price of roughly $300-$500, as that would allow it to compete. Xi3 is notorious for overpricing their product for what you get though, even with it being a rather "unique" platform that they are selling, it's not a good enough reason (to me).

I'm one of the few PC-only gamers that is impressed with what consoles can do for the price. Having said that, there is no way that a boutique brand like Xi3 can build a rig that is as small and accommodate a sufficient GPU to go up against the average gaming PC. The use of AMD CPUs is a good start, but they're running up against their thermal limits with anything above an HD 7790 or similar, at least that's how I see it.

Neat little device, but what would really make it a "transformative technology revolution for the living room" is if another vendor made a very similar box for MUCH CHEAPER. Someone will make a cheaper one that is just as good if the Xi3 Piston Console takes off, it often happens.

They pissed on my dreams by pricing this at $1000. Ouch, that price really hurts. Quite a powerful little well designed package though. Glad to see smaller systems advancing to accommodate serious hardware horsepower.

Agreed. Granted the form factor is unique, but they tend to overprice their systems. Heck I pieced together a notebook on Newegg that had an A8, 8GB of DDR3, and added a 128GB Samsung SSD and it totaled about $512 before S+H. Heck, going the Intel route you'll still spend under $900 with a middle-of-the-rad i3 or i5 model. For $1,000 I'd not settle for IGP. At that price point, it will have a real GPU like a GTX 770, not the 7640D graphics core.

Not to say i hate the Piston, as it's pretty damn cool, but priced too high for the type of guts it's using in regard to the CPU and CPU. (Their X7A isn't any better)

It has two CPU's?
