Very many people were complaining that they wanted the start button back in desktop mode. Microsoft put it in, and it takes you straight back to the tile start screen.

Microsoft is just giving all its desktop users one big middle finger. It's the Apple MO - "You'll take what we give you and like it" - with one major difference: Apple is giving its users what they want while MS is forcing its vision on its desktop users.

... can't believe I'm actually putting Apple ahead of MS. That would the first time for me. Then again, until now Microsoft has given us better operating systems, then this abomination showed up.

Hope Windows 9 is better. I've skipped 8.

Windows 9 will be subscription based. Imagine how cool it will be to pay a monthly rent to use your own computer!

This is exactly the point. Buying into Windows 8 is voting for an even worse Windows 9. Designed from the ground up by marketers, with only one end in mind: to make the stockholders happy for another 90 days.

A Subscription based OS? Well screw that! I am not paying M$ an x dollars a month fee to use my computer, which by the way, I spent hundreds if not a couple thousand in parts to build it in the first place! They make Windows 9 subscription based, I guarantee you I'll never switch from Windows 7! I love upgrading my OS when it's time, but I like 7. 8 is great under the hood, but what you see on the screen is a different story. So yes, I'll be sticking with 7 for a good while.

I will drop my Windows PC and switch to Apple before I buy into any iteration of Win 8. I am waiting for Lenovo to release there new Haswell notebooks (T540). If I cannot get one with Win7 then that will be it for me with the Windows operating system.

Windows 8 Pro can be "downgraded" to Windows 7 Pro. Don't let that stop you from getting a sweet T540 when they come out.

Considering OS X 10.9 is free and just about any modern system can be a Hackintosh, get cracking. Nothing stopping you. Just do it. I dare you. I double dare you.

Your loss, you old fart!

The truth is that Windows 8.1 the best OS ever made.

Faster and more optimized then Win7. I boot in my Win8.1 in 4 seconds.

I've never measured the quality of my operating system by boot time. But, when that's all you can brag about....

The best OS ever made?! You can actually say that without breaking out in laughter?

Can I get some of whatever you're on?

It is the best ever for touch devices (10/10 hands down). It is half better for desktops. I strongly recommend using the metro ui more than the desktop. It is far easier to navigate around. The stuff are passing in front of your eyes instead of your eyes going around. My only question is why Skype and other programs are not under the share button??? The same shit with the ipads.

Sent from surface pro 2.

If I want a tablet, I'll buy a tablet. Metro is totally useless for the work I do - and for the games I play.

@ fung0

Uhm, Metro UI is just a bunch of shortcuts in one folder. What more do you expect than that? You can get your gaming shorcs... and that's about it. It is good that the tiles are visually different and you could arrange them and find stuff faster, but having folders to operate files, I agree, it is not convenient unless they bring a comprehensive file explorer and Metro UI software. I highly doubt they will do something like that, because programmers will definitely refuse to port tons of software to the MUI.

One annoying thing with Surface is that the icons on the desktop don't stay in one place when you tilt the screen, unless you auto arrange.

I sure can fatso! Put down your Big Mac and tell me whats better?

Ummm.... Windows 7.

Really, you can boot in 4 seconds. Whooptie do. Leaving my computer in sleep mode most of the time makes that a moot point. In terms of functionality and control, Windows 7 is still far better. If I wanted a tablet on my desktop, I would have just put a tablet literally on my desktop.

Jacker

In truth Win8.1 has far better functionality, control, faster, smoother, more advanced options.

Good for you! You can still create a new folder on your desktop!

Could you cite an example other than a slightly faster boot times?
