"...its “Black” designation indicates that it’s one of Seagate’s “high-performance” drives..."

Pretty sure this is a typo...

Right now you can buy a Crucial 1TB SATA 6GB/s SSD on NewEgg for $400. That to me is a better deal than this drive for $100 less.

I was really expecting this to be a hybrid drive not two separate drives. And for a black drive the HDD portion should at least be 7200rpm at least. I feel like this is done with the blue/green drives and a really low end msata ssd.

Maybe Gen2 will have all WD hardware... sometimes mixing manufacturers (from Seagate in this case?) results in unforeseen problems... Though it totally mystifies me why they would use a Seagate 5400 1TB drive, in a WD product... unless that's a typo?

we’ll probably have to wait until Gen 2 to satisfy all of our desires.

Isn't this hard drive already "gen2"? It's called black2 and there was a previous version with only a 80gb ssd hybrid with the same 1tb hdd.

Black2 just means it uses the Black class components and firmware and contains 2 drives.

But yeah, this already does seem to be a second gen part, doesn't it? Seriously, for what it is, it's damned impressive, especially at that price point... greedy much, max PC?

The problem is that at that price point at the time, you could've a 1TB drive and a 120GB SSD (that performs better) for less. Mind you this would be a problem if you had a laptop with one drive mount.

But since then it's dropped to a more reasonable sounding $209 on Newegg.
