I don't like consoles, too limiting. I do like living room gaming. This might be good for me.

I agree with what you are saying about MS but Steam has been this way for about a decade. So for all steam gamers nothing really changes. MS freaked out their customer base since they are not used to those kind of limits or digital purchases. For steam this is purely to get in the console business and grab customers away from MS, Sony and Nin (the ones who liked the MS perks). Steam is allowing sharing of a whole library but without the extra rules that MS implemented and who hasn't let their friends borrow their account creds to play a game? My number 1 reason for jumping on the steam bandwagon is steam deals. By far unbeatable by any platform.

Basically, they're releasing the living room, fully digital, gaming platform Microsoft tried to release a few months back but the entire internet freaked out about. You have to be connected to the internet (maybe not every 24 hours, but realistically, if you have internet once a week, then you have it once a day). You can't share game discs (you actually could with the old XBOne policy, just nobody wanted to hear that). And all of your games come from a "walled garden" digital store (obviously Microsoft has the best developer tools of any platform so it's at least easier for the average developer to get a toe in the door).

I've said it before, I have nothing against some competition, and I like the sounds of this new Steam platform solely for the reason that I can choose my hardware. But it's just so blatantly obvious that it doesn't matter what product Microsoft brings to market, people just hate on them. Put the same product under a different brand and nobody's complaining (except for the fact that the only thing anybody really wants from Steam is a new Half-Life).

Rictus

No Ricochet 2? noooooooo...

avatar

bpstone

I would have to try it before judging it.

avatar

Led Weappelin

I really thought we'd finally get an announcement on HL3.

Bummed. Major bummed.

avatar

Rift2

This is a really good idea....Dark Souls 2 will be awesome with it...
a lot of people don't want to play Dark souls 2 with a keyboard and mouse and the PC version will have better graphics by far.

Still have a PS4 ordered though =)

avatar

legionera

And that's why kids, you should never use drugs =D

This controller will e so heavy... just can't see them releasing it.

Let's hope that they'll at least add a PS/360 controller support.

avatar

Volleynova

Instead of announcing Half-Life 2 Episode 3 / Half-Life 3 to the world, they announce a stupid controller.

We are a mouse & keyboard crew. Get back to making Half-Life for crying out loud.

avatar

jbitzer

I like my xbox controller. This will have to be very precise and work much better than anything I've used to make me want one.

I usually don't like touch pads because I always run off the edge of the pad just navigating windows, when gaming that could be a big problem.

avatar

A Steam OS? That sounds good. I hate Windows 8, and in a couple of years I would be happy to have a decent alternative to buying Windows 9. It's not impossible that Steam Linux will be that decent alternative. MS badly needs the competition.

Steam console hardware? Cool. I like the lower prices of games on Steam. I also prefer a PC's power and flexibility. The more average gamers that choose Steam consoles for their living rooms, the more developers will release their AAA games for PCs straightaway.

An innovative controller? That could be great. The mouse and keyboard are far better than those mushy Xbox and PS3 controllers, but surely pressing WASD can't be the final stage in the evolution of game control.

avatar

Granite

I suppose if all you do on your PC is play Steam games, this SteamOS could be an attractive alternative. If you want to do anything else, you will be forking yourself.

I suspect those who use their PC's for anything other than games will give this a pass.

I need Firefox - Linux has this. I need a replacement for my Windows Live Mail that works in a similar way - shouldn't be impossible. I would like a driver for my very old Canon monochrome laser printer (that still works perfectly). That might not be so easy, but I am prepared to buy a new monochrome laser printer that works with Linux. I need a word processor that is compatible with modern versions of Word.

Once Steam Linux OS for PCs comes out, and as long as it is easy on the eye - I will abandon Microsoft because I am irritated with them over (a) the fact I wasted money buying the Windows 8 abomination, (b) MS throwing PC users under the bus to promote the X-Box, and (C) their move to the ribbon in MS Word.

avatar

Hey.That_Dude

Get OfficeLibre and save everything in compatibility mode.

Your Windows drivers for that printer are likely supported in a Wine environment, so try it out before you buy another one.

I've never Used Windows Live Mail but I assume it's just like ThunderBird from mozilla...

avatar

Hey.That_Dude

Not really. Linux has very capable programs for anything short of CAD (and even then only some CAD programs are not supported well). Gaming has always been the ONE thing that Linux never really got.

And honestly, if it comes down to it WINE will run your windows programs that you can't leave behind. (It just always had problems with games)

avatar

aarcane

But will it have Android support?

That's what I'm really waiting for is Steam on Android for more serious gamers on the go.

avatar

lacky32

I feel like most people are missing the point of this. It is not there intention of getting people who already play games on PC to play on a different PC. If it does that's cool but, they are trying to get people that play on consoles. The whole point is the living room. The reason they want PC gamers to test and help is to make it better and because, if you haven't noticed, we are a very loud minority.

avatar

radarblips

If this controller turns out to be playable, even in the least bit, i will poop in my hands and eat it. that's how confident i am that this piece of junk will never catch on.

avatar

bensen408

Well folks, I said it in a different post and I'll say it again here.

The ONLY news I care about coming out of Valve is Half Life 3. No news? Well then Steam, I just don't care about you.

SteamOS? Why bother? I have Windows7 Ultimate, Windows Home Server 2011, and Windows Home Premium running live and a new server under contruction which I'll be running any assortment of OS'es in a VM environment. SteamOS.. PASS.

Steambox? Pass. I have my custom WHS2K11 and a Wi-Fi enabled bluray player.

Steam Controller? Great, more crap.

GIMME Half Life 3 or just wither up and die like Atari (but stay dead).

avatar

RUSENSITIVESWEETNESS

Wow. Another kiddie console....

I was hoping for an alternative to the forthcoming subscription-based Windows 9 crap, not another kiddie console.

avatar

EKRboi

HL3 not confirmed. eff you valve.. eff you.. =(

avatar

Ghok

Certainly worth a try. I don't in a million years think this would replace mouse and keyboards for shooters, but it would be better at it than what we have now.

avatar

RUSENSITIVESWEETNESS

Better than a grown-up's PC?

avatar

mah_101381

A controller that's inverted? Looks uncomfortable, will keep my 360 controller.

avatar

jgottberg

Hard to tell if the left pad can also perform like a directional D-pad, like a PS3 style remote. If so, I think it looks like a pretty awesome 'mote.

avatar

froggz

Announcements are nice and all, but I'm ready to jump on board right now. Ready to download SteamOS, I have a spare drive I can use to dual boot this puppy, and this controller looks like it would be the final solution to the mouse and keyboard alternative us PC gamers have been looking for since the beginning of time.

avatar

Competition Is What We Need. Another strong player in the game/entertainment market is a very welcomed thing, it encourages innovation, forces a better product to market and at a lower price-a win, win, win. Vavle is encouraging Steam machine testers to use custom mods to include software, they obviously want the gamers that would purchase the product involved in creating the gaming device we would really want to pay for-no other company would do this.
I'm enrolled in the Beta testing program with Valve. Enrollment is still open for all interested(See Steam for details).

I love all the childish comments here:

"I wouldn't use this, therefore it should not exist"

Guess what kiddies? No one is forcing you to buy it, and you're not the center of the universe.

avatar

RUSENSITIVESWEETNESS

That's right, because I am the actual center of the universe.

avatar

glpeter90

No one is forcing you too read them.

avatar

jbitzer

Oh yeah, you're right, I am looking for a discussion on an article, it's clearly my fault I have to wade through 500 "this is shit, I'd never buy it, all you who like it are stupid" comments.

Moron

avatar

glpeter90

501 counting yours. Nice picture of you and your dad.

avatar

brannank

Right on.

avatar

Shalbatana

I wonder if there will be a version that runs on PC? I was thinking of getting an xbox controller for the PC, but maybe this instead?

avatar

jbitzer

Yeah, there's more info on Steam's reveal page, and the FAQ, it can be used on PC.

avatar

PCLinuxguy

considering a steambox is a PC..

avatar

Shalbatana

yeah point taken, but then again, the new xbox one controller can't, as yet, work on a PC.

avatar

glpeter90

Steam seems to screw me over about every other month. I would complain, but to who ? They have no support. Fool me once !

avatar

jbitzer

https://support.steampowered.com

Yeah, they should really have a big button on their main page to get to that URL, oh, wait.

avatar

EKRboi

Have you ever actually tried to use steam support? I have. i love steam, but their support is useless.

I have an example from a few days ago.. Installed linux on new machine, install steam, try to log in and have to verrify new machine. Says look for the email we just sent you for activation code. Its not there (yes i checked spam, i have done this process many times before), leave and come back a couple hours later, still no email. So i shoot support a ticket about the issue. I immediatly got the email about my support ticket. 2 days later no reply. I have 3 other tickets from over the years.. and guess what.. not a single one of them was ever replied to.

avatar

jbitzer

It takes 48 hours to answer, but I've never had them not fix any issues I have.

avatar

glpeter90

I have about a dozen steam games, if not more. Have been a customer for years. I guess I should say Steam's supports really can't suck, because there would need to be some in order for it to suck. The web page that that steam fan boy points out is useless. Steam makes changes, and then never documents them. I have spend days reading the faq only to find out later that they just decided to make a change, and if it affects you, too bad. One thing I have learned, that making a comment against steam on here is like talking about religion. Steam fan boy is just another preacher.

avatar

jbitzer

Yeah, I'm a steam fan boy because all you losers coming into these articles with comments like "WAAH WAAH! No Half Laife 3 announcement, boo hoo!"

And "This is the dumbest thing ever raaargh!!! RAAAAAGE!!! I have no use for it, but I'll post 50 times how you are all TEH GHEY for liking it RAAAAARRHGHHGHG!"

Just fucking go read about what sale newegg has today, Some people are interested in the opportunities these products will provide.

Good for you guys for not having any interest, now go play with your toys in the playroom while mommy cuts the crusts off your sandwiches.

avatar

Bucket_Monster

Slapping tablet touch controls on my physical controller? Yeah no thanks.

avatar

davelray

I'm curious as to the usefulness of a touch screen that small on a game controller myself. But, I'll try it out when it comes out if they have them hooked up somewhere for me to play with. BestBuy and Gamestop are fantastic to try before you buy heh heh.

avatar

Peanut Fox

At a glance this looks like a bad design.

avatar

jaymz668

My computer has a perfectly good couple of monitors, why would I want to not use those to game on?

Why would I want to take over the TV so that nobody else in the house can use it to watch TV?

avatar

SuperSATA

I hope you realize that the Steam box is aimed to compete with the consoles, not get PC gamers to play it.

avatar

lhatten

Who has only 1 TV in the house? Please!

avatar

Neufeldt2002

Actually, I only have one TV. Several computers for various family members but only one TV. We share it for family time together.
