Wow so much anger but I will agree with Joe The Plumber. This is for in house sharing only really. Thanks for the info. If these are devices in my house why not just have them all sign in with the same creds.

i've been in the beta for a few months now and it works pretty well. although i had been sharing my account with my brother for the last 6 years or so anyways. now it is all "legit"

This doesn't really change anything. You still have to login to the computer and install a game on a computer to authorize it. If your family or friend is in another state you're out of luck. And I don't want to hear another person say use LogMeIn. I should be able to just authorize a user to have access.

While this is great for "family" use where there is one main computer, it does not help if you are in different locations.

did you read the article? i just did twice and it sounds like this fixes it.

avatar

Joe The Plummer

I did read the article. And no it does not "fix" it. You cannot authorize a user to access your library on a computer you have not logged into and installed games on. It does not solve the problem of not being in the same household.

ahhh i just love how people comment and complain about stuff they have no experience or clue about. you don't have to log into a computer to authorize it to use YOUR library. i've been in the sharing beta for a few months now. once a friend sees that you are part of the beta, they can simply request to share your library. after YOU receive the email requesting permission, YOU simply authorize it by clicking the provided link or choose to ignore it. its that simple. from there, YOUR library shows up under THEIR library while simply stating it is so-and-so's library and from there, they will download whatever games they like to begin playing.

they will have their own save slots or cloud saves, their own achievements, and such. although games requiring a third-party login/client WILL NOT be playable

Ah, I love people who comment about something they know nothing about. I too am a member of the beta. Let me be clear so even the most inept of minds can understand. YOU HAVE TO LOGIN TO STEAM ON THE COMPUTER YOU WISH TO SHARE YOUR LIBRARY WITH! That is the problem I have with this whole thing. I can't just authorize user "acidic" to access my library no matter where he is. If "acidic" wishes to play a game in my library on his PC, I then have to login with my Steam credentials on his computer, install a game(s) and then he can access them.

The only thing that has changed is that before ANYONE with access to that computer could access my library of games. Now I can limit it to a specific account. But it doesn't change the fact that I have to be physically there to login to my Steam account to authorize that device.

Is this clear? Do you now understand? Or are you just blinded by your devotion to anything Valve does?

hmmm. let me see. 1)my brother lives just over 700 miles away
2)he HASN'T logged in on my account on his machine since his reformat a few months ago (therefor not authorized) 3)he simply requested to be able to share my library 4)i checked my email 5)authorized him 6)happy sharing 7)this all happened LAST WEEK 8)he still shows up as authorized under my account settings

let me guess, that you're an apple fanatic and such simple steps are much too hard for your simple mind ? your name suits you perfectly as it describes why you talk all this shit

Wow, just wow. Please stop spreading FUD. The only way that works is if YOU logged into HIS computer. He doesn't log into your computer, you log into his so already I know you have no idea about how this works.

But to put this to bed. Here is the Steam FAQ on Family Sharing:
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=3784-QLBM-5731
Quoting the relevant section:
Once a device has been authorized, simply log in. (As a guest, there’s no need for you to also be a beta participant.) In your Library, you can request access to play any of the games installed by another user ON THIS COMPUTER.

Note that shared games are only available on devices that have been AUTHORIZED by the account holder. Also, shared games may be unavailable if the account holder's library is currently in use on another computer.

AND JUST TO BE CLEAR - THIS IS HOW YOU AUTHORIZE A DEVICE:
I'm in the Beta! How do I authorize my shared computer?

As a selected beta participant, first opt into the latest Steam Client Beta Update. Then, authorize a device to share via the “Account” tab in Settings, where you’ll find a button to "Manage Family Sharing & Devices", followed by a button to “AUTHORIZE THIS MACHINE.” Once authorized, selected accounts may log in and play your shared games.

Plus just look at the many discussion threads that lament that you need to physically login to any computer you wish to authorize (share) games with.

In other words, works as intended, but makes your unlicensed game sharing inconvenient? Awww, maybe you'll just have to all buy a copy of the game you're sharing like you're supposed to.

Or you could use logmein.

avatar

Joe The Plummer

And they want to compete with consoles how? If I buy a game for a console and wish to share it with a friend or family member, I can give them the disc and they can play it. No need for me to log into anything. Honestly I don't care about this feature but if you're going to offer it and are making all this noise about competing with consoles then you damn well better offer something MORE compelling if you want people to switch.

avatar

jbitzer

So retard, you can just authorize your family member in another state to play your console games without mailing him the disc? And you want to cry and moan about logmein?

You're a pirating asshat, and the intention isn't to let people not living with you get your games free.

avatar

Joe The Plummer

You're a stupid anonymous loser troll on the Internet. I do not pirate games and I do not condone pirating of games. I can in fact mail a console game to a relative in another state if I so choose. Or drop it off if they're in another town nearby. Either way it's easier and more convenient to share games on a console without risking my account credentials. That's the problem with LogMeIn or any other remote desktop. You're trusting that your relative doesn't have malware installed on their PC.

Once again, I don't care about this feature that much BUT IF THEY ARE PUBLICLY COMPETING AGAINST CONSOLES THEY HAVE TO DO THINGS BETTER NOT WORSE.

avatar

DoctorX

wtf? who pissed in your Wheaties this morning? Nowhere did he say play at the same time. The family plan update fixes the multiple computer problem. Go take your meds and get off the piracy bullshit.

avatar

jbitzer

Yes he did if you are paying attention. You can't authorize someone far away, boo hoo. Well on a console you have to mail the disc to them smart guy if they live 500 miles away.

He wants to authorize someone not living with him to play his games. That is not the purpose of it, sorry your meds aren't working moron.

avatar

Joe The Plummer

No I didn't. Are people who loan out their console games pirates to you? Sorry you're reading comprehension isn't working moron.

avatar

jbitzer

Then go play your console games. No other PC game maker allow sharing, so of course dump on steam because they haven't molded it to your personal perfect vision. Go cray about it more.

My brother and I (who live states apart) will most certainly be taking advantage of this. Seems pretty freakin' cool if it all works properly and as advertised.
