PCs on Average Half the Cost of Macs

Posted 09/11/2008 at 09:47:28pm

I've never understood the elitist attitude of Mac fans.  I've used many distros of Linux and every version of dos and windows, mac, os2, and so on.  I just can't get my head around it.  It is kind of like voting for a socialist...  It doesn't make sense to me but, someone out there thinks it is a good idea.

linuxis a real OS.  I use Debian and Mepis a Debian based distro.  In Linux I can use Gimp in much the same way one might use photoshop.  I can browse the Web with Firefox 3, or Opera, or any other browser.  I can do everything that any other user can do with any other OS.  I can do all of these things with less resources and for free.  I just can't play top end games easily.

2008: Year of the Linux Desktop

I wouldn't think of linux as software socialism.  I would think of it as a group of independat revolutionaries fed up with ineffective corporate bureaucracy.  Kind of like our founding fathers ideals that lead them to the realization of their concepts.  Linux isn't perfect, I have long said that for developers to realy get behind it the OS distros need to standardize there package management and file structures.  This could also be bad for security, making it to easy for people to take advantage of sameness.

Linux is Under Attack!

I know what you mean.  It gets you thinking.  I've always said that linux is not bulletproof.  So many loyalists to linux and mac blindly believe they are invulnerable.  I use all OS's I can find.  They all have their strengths and weaknesses.

I think it will be difficult for the game industry to get behind linux until all of the distro's get together and implement some kind of universal package organization so that the game companies can release one game for all linux distro's and not have users struggling to install the software packages required to run it.  Of course having packages in a unified location will make it easier for virus programmers to strike all linux users independant of the distro they use.

I agree that Mac messed up their implimentation.  One of the features I love about linux is being able to log in with different desktop environments/gui's/window managers.  It is the flesxability, and security, of the OS that keeps me using it.  Mac ties your hands.

I love Debian.  All of the best distros are based on it.  So why not just use it instead of the ones based on it?

Ubuntu Box Distro Hits Consumer Electronics Stores For $20, Still Free Online

I think charging for linux is wrong.  Open source should be open and gnu.  If you want to contribute money go ahead.  If you want contribute time, do it.  I personally have been using Mepis for a few years now.  I think it is better than Ubuntu.  For my hardware setup it found and recognized all of my hardware.  Ubuntu did not correctly set up my video.  I had to configure x manually.  Mepis boots a little quicker.  I like the KDE desktop that comes with Mepis.  I have run too many distos to mention, and Mepis is my fav.  I currently tripple boot Mepis, WinblozeXP, and Puppy.
