If you zoom in so you have a 1:1 pixel ratio you'll be able to see it in all it's glory, albeit a small piece at a time. You'll have to pan around to see it all.

Symantec: Using Microsoft's Free AV is Dangerous

Posted 07/07/2009 at 07:50:32pm

Really, a company trying to make profits?!? OMG what a revelation!

I suppose you will be likewise freaked that people pay for MaximumPC to be delivered to their homes when it can be had for free on the internet!

The point made by MPC is that it used to be crappy, but has taken a huge step toward the better - a kick-ass worthy step. You should take the product manager's statement with a grain of salt. My point is that MPC seems to agree that paid-for is better than free, which is better than nothing, which kind of agrees with Symantec's position.

Symantec: Using Microsoft's Free AV is Dangerous

Posted 07/07/2009 at 05:41:06pm

Didn't MaximumPC give Symantec's Norton Internet Security 2009 a Kick-Ass award? Didn't you point out that the free programs were lacking or offered incomplete protection, or were resource hogs? Didn't you laude and honor NIS for it's resource-sipping performance?

  • NIS2K9 = 9 Kick Ass
  • AVG = 5 (Free) / 7 (Paid version)
  • Avast = 5
  • Avira = 8
  • PC Tools = 3

I think the big question is how the Microsoft offering compares. I use NIS2K9 on my heavily used personal PCs and Avira on those I use less. I can't say I regret it.

Also, only a fool pays for Norton - rebates are so frequent and reliable you can almost always get a free (after MIR) version. I haven't paid for a Norton product for nearly 10 years.

World's Slimmest Flash Drives Look Like Credit Cards

Posted 05/11/2009 at 10:39:08am

I've got one, and I'd like to point out that these are about 4 times thicker than credit cards. They have to be or they don't make contact with the USB port or they fall out.

Also, most of the card is just wasted space, as the tiny black piece is all you need. Drives that use this SFF are available in larger capacities for less than these cards. I've got an 8GB that was about $20.

Patriot Adds 4GB and 8GB DDR2 Memory Kits to Mobile SODIMM Lineup

Posted 05/08/2009 at 09:48:11am

What will this give me over the 4GB currently humming along in my laptop? Tons of VMs running simultaneously? It might not be so Maximum-y, by I'd rather max out my wallet and wait a year or two for the price to be more reasonable than spend $3C for virtually no real-world benefit.

[Not So] Crazy - Redmond to Protect Pirated and Legit Window 7 Copies

Posted 05/01/2009 at 09:56:55am

This was supposed to be a reply to winmasters comment below.

If someone is running a pirated copy of Windows, and Microsoft
discovers this, they should be locked out of your computer. They should
make it stop halfway through the boot process and say:

You are a dick for pirating software. Either pay up and enter a VALAD license or reformat and install linux, fucker.

That way, it won't matter if you are patched because you won't be able to use your computer anyway.

The issue isn't people downloading from torrents, it's OEMs and other system builders who don't properly license the OSes. How do you tell the difference bewteen an actual stolen copy, and a copy where the OEM didn't properly apply the license? Both appear to be pirated machines to Microsoft's activation servers, but the former case is illegal and the latter is just laziness - but instead of punishing the lazy person (the OEM) you want to hurt the unsuspecting user, and rudely, too.

Intel Unveils New Chip Logos, Star Rating System

So how do they plan on dealing with relative performance over generations? Say I buy a 4-star chip today, and am looking at a 4 star chip next year. How is the customer supposed to distinguish between the two?
