Western Digital Boasts Record Year in Quarterly Revenue Report
Posted 10/23/2009 at 05:28:43pm
I guess people are upgrading instead of buying new PCs?
I always buy WD hard drives and have never had one fail on me- until this year. Both my own and my brother's WD hard drives failed recently.
Perhaps as the company goes more mainstream, they cater to customers wanting cheaper goods?
My hard drive was top of the line when I bought it though. (500GB w/ 16MB buffer)
Microsoft Considering Zune Service for Apple Devices

Does this mean Zune software will support iPods, or that the Zune software will be ported to Macs?
Some Windows 7 Upgrades Could Take Over 20 Hours To Complete
Posted 09/13/2009 at 11:04:31am
I dual boot XP and 7 RC 64-bit. My XP Program Files folder has 150 items. I haven't reinstalled since January 2006.
While I'd like to be able to do an in-place upgrade from the 7 RC to the final version (the option wasn't available when I tried doing it with the RTM release), I am probably going to have to clean install it again.
It would sure take me a long ass time if I ever have to reinstall XP though. At least I don't have to do that!
BTW, if I buy the upgrade version of Windows 7, will it let me do a clean install on another partition and dual boot?

Maximum TV: How to Build a Hulu Desktop + Boxee PC

I hooked up an old computer to my 52 inch LCD and it's fine for watching DVDs and DVD-rips but it chokes on anything that uses flash video or h.264 because it's only a P4 1.7.
I upgraded the video card to a GeForce 6200 (mainly so I could get HDMI output) but that doesn't seem to help. I tried using CoreAVC but the system still wasn't fast enough for h.264, so, fail.
OTOH I can record cable TV on it using a TV tuner card but it's 640x480 analog, standard def.
Number Transfers Coming to Google Voice
Posted 06/15/2009 at 12:13:21pm
I use GV for my business and recently moved to another state. I bought a new number that forwards to my GV number. I can't wait until I can move it over to GV and get rid of the annoying delay that having it forwarded twice generates. :)
Time Warner Working to Shut Down Local Providers of Affordable Broadband

Boycotting Time Warner would be nice if you had the option.
Sometimes your choices are Time Warner or much slower DSL, or none at all.
As If You Needed Another Reason Not to Buy Laptops from Office Depot

"Why would ANY business want to destroy their reputation with nonsense policies that punish employees and customers at the same time?"
Why would any company give millions in bonuses to employees that ran the company into the ground and required a government bailout to fix it?
Privacy Group Calls on FTC to Kill Google Docs

"Let me guess, I bet none of the accidently shared docs contained Google corporate information.."
Those are probably stored in encrypted Word & Excel documents in a secure location at Google. As they should be.
Computer Science College Enrollment on the Upswing
Posted 03/17/2009 at 10:44:26pm
During a recession, school enrollment always increases.
As for the claim that "computer science entails little more than sitting cooped up in front of a PC banging out code," I (somewhat) agree. I have a bachelor's degree in computer science and, if you work in the software industry, your job will be almost exactly that. It's about 25% writing new code, and 75% debugging.
As it stands, I'm switching careers into something different. I'm not sure what yet, but I want to do something where I don't have to spend all day in a God damned cubicle.
