Can Windows 7 Fix Vista’s Tarnished Image in the History Books?
Posted 07/28/2009 at 01:08:09pm
/agree, 32 bit OS needs to be NUKED. Most computers these days are usuing atleast 2GB and Core i7s tri-channel setup will easily push that to 3 gb. I hardly understood a 32 bit vista, and a 32 bit win7 makes even less sense. 64 bit has been around for 10 years and yet some companies still refuse to make drivers/apps. One of the most annoying to me is Flash, how software that popular isnt available in 64 bit is just beyond me. I guess it comes down to demand. Until MS pushes the market into 64bit ONLY software vendors will continue to be lazy/cheep and only release software in the dominant format.

And then there will be 10 million software vendors who lag behind on driver support. Creative and other major players already fail at release drivers, asking to write them from scratch would take years. "writing a os from scratch" is the exact reason software is so limited on OSX, well that and the fact that last time I checked OSX still only had less than 5% market share. Win7 is leaps and bounds better than vistas driver support, and the beta honestly feels like a polished OS. (I even upgraded my motherboard from a 680i chipset to Intels, and windows 7 automatically installed the necessary drivers, absolutly 0 headaches. When I attempted switching motherboard chipsets with vista a coupe years ago, it blue screend requiring a reformat.) As for no inexpensive upgrade path, was 50 bux not a screaming deal? Honestly windows has stepped it up for Win7, only place they have failed IMO is the necessity for an os to be installed for an upgrade. But, to only pay 50 bucks you can't complain too much.
On a side note, I wish these 12 yo russian kids would start messing up crapples 'no virus' reputation. But back to the market share, no one wants to attack an OS no one uses.

Will, I can't speak for other users, but I'm pretty sure MPC lead me to adblock plus. Now I know the site needs to be funded in some way, but you can't be upset that we're using the tools you suggested. Perhaps we can have the best of both worlds. A free site for the general public complete with ads and a 'ad free' premium service as part of the MPC subscription? Hell I'd even pay an extra 10 or 20 a year for that ontop of the mag price especially if I could get digital copies of the mag on release day. Us college students don't have perm. addresses and we often have them sent to our parents homes. Unfortunatly, this leaves me reading one to three month old mags often.
It never amazes me what aholes people can be on the internet. It's one thing to express opinion, it's another to cry about things you don't finanically support.

I'd also have to agree that the resource center is completly misleading. If each link was actually a seperate ad, with useful info it would be much more acceptable. But in its current form, it's decieving and all 4 links (5 if u include the header lol) are to the same ad.
Giving me ads is fine, in fact I enjoy a few of them. Misleading me into thinking it's MPC content is where its frustrating.

Only thing that bugs me is the side bar grid of grey and black. Scrolling on my 25ms LCD creates a 'flashing' ghosting effect that is very unpleasant. The orange was nice IMO, but can't please all.
I like another users tip on here: Selectible color schemes for those of us with user accounts. Even if this only started as a gallery of the old styles, it will avoid the ZOMG WHERES MY PRETTY STYLE, IM LEAVING sort of response.
Gelid Releases New Thermal Compound in Bigger Tube

I used Arctic Silver, but I doubt different thermal compounds could cause a very significant difference. Hmmm. I smell article! I'd bet even chepo generic thermal compound from Radio Shack would work comparably.

The 50 Most Important PC Components of the Modern Computing Era
Posted 05/05/2009 at 10:31:51am
I've got a few things on this list still running strong! I've got the sound blaster 1998 card (has it really been that long?) still running great in my girlfriends XP based machine. I'm also still using a 32gb Raptor as my operating system drive that has to be on its last leg, I mean 6 years of 10,000 rpms has to do some damage. And perhaps most impressivly, I am still running a mircosoft inteliexplorer 3.0. Sure the wires shorted and the feet are ground into the base, but that didn't stop me from rewiring it and throwing some new feet on it. Very shocked to see that i'm using some PC parts 11, 6, and 10 years old. Props to companies who make a lasting product.
