Murphy's Law: Microsoft's Restrictive Netbook Rules

Posted 05/29/2009 at 01:22:39pm

Wow, Microsoft being a bully and stifling a PC market, who would've thoght? *gasps*

NOBODY should be able to tell you what a piece of software you legally purchased can and can't be used on. As long as you're not pirating it, it shouldn't be any of their business.

Just makes me all the more pleased w/ using Linux on my netbook.... and my desktop... and my MythTV machine... and my router... and my wireless AP... and my NAS. Microsoft is doing very little to win back over customers from their absolute failure that is Vista. Frankly between this and the fact that Windows 7 will inheriently give Microsoft the ability to shutdown my machine at a wim? I'll be sticking w/ Linux, MS can stuff their software where the sun doesn't shine.

Hulu Still Trying to Keep Foreigners Out; Blocks Proxies

Posted 05/11/2009 at 07:47:27am

I noticed this 'issue' the other day, as I use AlwaysVPN to get my content from Hulu. i find this sort of international blocking a true shame, but it seems to be growing. Pandora is another great service people outside the US cannot use, and now Last.fm has added itself to the list of online services that filter based on location.

I ditched my cable tv hookup a few months ago for Hulu and some other online services. I perfered to use Hulu because it was atleast supporting the companies that produce the content with ads. I found myself wasting inordinate amounts of money on a cable tv connection to watch a handleful of shows, and get my news content (which I can get for free online).  However, if given the choice between paying someone $50 + to watch a few shows every month and resorting to downloading torrents of said shows? I'll switch to torrenting them, I don't enjoy doing something like this in a less-than-honorable approach, but you've got to give the people what they want or be prepared for the consiqudences of your actions.

This just reminds me of what the music industry tried to do and failed. They attempted to stem the tied of download-based music services and it cost them dearly, and they capitulated in the end. The same thing will happen here. Just as usual you need to give the lumbering big business model a while to wake up and realize they're squandering a golden oppertunity.

The Beginner's Guide to Linux, Part 3: Choosing Your Window Manager and Desktop Environment

Posted 03/24/2009 at 07:25:57am

I personally pefer Xfce. I ended up having it forced on me when I installed MythDora back in the day, and slowly it grew on me. It became that odd flavoured bevage that you slowly start to love over time. Finally about a year ago, I switched to using it on my main Desktop machine, and also my Netbook. Now? Well it's all I use. Simple, fast, and very little overhead. Lets me run Linux in all its glory w/out the large footprint Gnome and KDE leave... though comparative to Windows? They're pretty small too.

HP Drops Linux From Its U.K Netbook Lineup

Posted 02/09/2009 at 10:44:36am

I perhaps may be in the minority here I guess. I bought a Lenovo S10 Netbook about a month ago. It came w/ WinXP, but I foudn it to be sluggish and really just a waste of my time. The first thing I did when I got my Netbook home was to nuke the WinXP install and drop Ubuntu 8.10 on the machine. Been extremely happy ever since. But then again, I use Linux for everything in my house, and at work. Why risk the security concerns? Especially on a portable PC.

How To: Encrypt Your Entire Hard Drive The Easy Way Using TrueCrypt

Posted 02/02/2009 at 12:16:15pm

Hey just a note Block, TrueCrypt has actually been proven to have 0 performance hit on any PC it's installed on. I can also speak from experience in this matter. Every HDD I own has full disk system encryption installed on it. It doesn't slow down Vista, Windows XP, or Ubuntu Linux. Or on any media drives I have it installed on.

Mortal OS Kombat: Linux versus Windows 7

Personally I'd just use the Linux remote desktop client or vnc. and do the exact same thing as Windows Remote Desktop.

The lack of understanding shown by the people posting here (not just you) is astounding. Hammer on something that by your own admission you barely understand. I'm not sure but isn't that judging the book by it's cover? Or worse yet stereotyping. I could go further... but I'll bite my tounge.

My suggestions for these two amazing people:

Benson - King of the Redshirts or 'the expendable one'

Reed -  Admiral Kendal Ozzel (look the name up), however he has to grow a 60's porno flick style mustache and shave his head.Or Just call him 'Kenny' for short, and get twice the mileage from the name.
