Symantic and McAfee are often the reason I get computers in for repair... they can really hose an install. AVG Free works fine for most people.

Analysts Predict AMD & Intel will Struggle in 2009

Posted 11/17/2008 at 09:47:55pm

On the other hand, it caused me to look up some more Carlin quotes... here's a few I like.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish, and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

If lawyers are disbarred and clergymen defrocked, doesn't it follow that electricians can be delighted, musicians denoted?

Inside every cynical person, there is a disappointed idealist.

Keepin' Productive, the Freeware Way

Posted 11/17/2008 at 08:32:58pm

I've been using a Windows 3.1 version of Quicken since the mid 90's that came with my first 486 computer. Believe it or not, I've got it to work off a flashdrive on Vista except backup... it wants a floppy drive. It does everything I want, where new versions of Quicken or Money just make your life a living Hell. Hopefully, this will be a simple, viable alternative.

Analysts Predict AMD & Intel will Struggle in 2009

As long as my various comps do their jobs, they don't get replaced. That's not to say that some components don't get upgraded, but a complete replacement cycle for me is a few years, and I'm right in the middle of the current one. So I guess you can say I'm more software driven. When working on art, music or playing a game becomes too tedious, or a compelling operating sysem (someday soon come?) requires bigger iron, that's when I smack down the Visa card.

AT&T One-Ups Comcast with 20GB (not 120GB) Bandwidth Cap

Posted 11/04/2008 at 03:33:51pm

I have AT&T DSL and pay $35 for midlevel service... a whopping 3MB down/ 256k up! My only other choice in Key West is Comcast, which I have always thought of as the Evil Empire. I may have to sign up with them... I'm watching more and more online video. In fact, I haven't watched TV for almost 2 years now. At least I'll get decent upload speeds...

Also, why are the overage fees so punitive? Bandwith isn't all that expensive.
