Future Tense: Letting Go of Yesterday's Tomorrows

Posted 10/29/2009 at 02:35:17pm

an enjoyable column.  it made me think of Heinlin's Starship Troopers (the book, not the PoS movie) and the progress the military is making with human exoskeletons and automated war machines.

i wish humanity would collectively yearn and work a bit more to encourage, reward and cultivate personal responisiblity, too.  i guess that sort of semi-utopian societywon't be here until star date 1843.2.  when it's not, i know who to blame!

Who Needs ATMs? Bank Lets You Deposit Checks with Your iPhone

Posted 08/11/2009 at 03:11:31am

talked to my bank about that and apparently they contract out ATMs, even the ones in the branch.  which means if you deposit a check in the ATM (keep in mind they don't know what's actually in the envelope, yet).  at the end of the day the envelopes are removed and brought to a sorting facility.  then they're scanned in to the system the following day and sent to the bank at the end of that day.  they are "cleared" the business day after that.  that's why i never use the ATM to deposit, if i ever have to make a physical deposit.

USAA is an awesome company, btw.  you may only become a member and sign up for their services if you are on active military duty.  the military has been using DD for payroll for many years so the primary impetus for this is not likely to be legions of people trying to deposit payroll checks.

this is very cool, imho.  i hate going to the bank branch.  waiting in line makes me grumpy, especially when it's for a small personal check or somesuch.

Congress Says P2P is Dangerous to National Security, Singles Out LimeWire

Posted 07/30/2009 at 10:41:54pm

limewire and other p2p's aren't dangerous and don't put people at risk unless they're used by people who don't know wtf they're doing.

it's too bad government can't regulat stupidity (they'd have to start with themselves)

Spiderman, Evil Dead Director Helming World of Warcraft Movie

Posted 07/22/2009 at 04:06:10am

i hope this movie is entertaining too, but if depth of content "makes the movie" then i think the Warhammer universe from Games Workshop would hold the crown of best-game-to-movie franchise.
