In Test Windows 7 Netbooks Take Battery Life Hit
Posted 11/12/2009 at 03:28:13am
On my Sony Vaio VGN-TXN15P my battery life went from 5:45 down to 5:10 (Around a half-hour or so loss)... However, performance is much better, even over than XP. Boot time is faster and overall operational time is faster... I'll sacrifice a few minutes of battery life for better performance... I have no intentions of switching back to XP or Vista...unless I find something that hasn't come up over the past few months of Beta testing... All in all, it's worth the sacrifice - at least to me.
The Game Boy: One Step Forward, Modern Warfare Two Steps Back

I'll try to keep your comments in mind as I'm shooting up some terrorists...
I hope you sleep well at night under your blanket of ignorance.
Gamer was one of the stupidest movies I have EVER seen.
If I were driving in Gran Turismo and had the option to RUN OVER terrorists, trust me, I would...and I promise that I WOULD BE raving about it...
I think you're probably just upset because mommy won't buy it for you because it's rated "M". Well, when you get to be old enough you can make those decisions for yourself. Until then, leave the grown-ups to talk amongst themselves...and try not to interrupt. Now take this case of C-4 and go play.
The Game Boy: One Step Forward, Modern Warfare Two Steps Back

What a bunch of pansy-ass commies... I've played video games with the best of them, every COD, every Metal Gear, Every GTA, every Medal of Honor and have been a gamer since the Atari 2600 came out... Don't ruin a good story-line by "smoothing" things over for those that can't handle a little realistic type event (same goes for the idiots censoring Left4Dead II's cover art).
COD: MWII will be a great game. Don't bust my bubble by rambling about some pansy-ass whiny wuss's that can't "handle the truth". The world is a cold hard place, terrorism is real, let us have a little fun shooting the bastards (read: terrorists) that we might not get to shoot in real life...
How to Build a Kick-Ass Windows Home Server
Posted 10/26/2009 at 10:08:33am
I just installed 4 1.5TB WDGreen HDD's, full, complete from the ground up reinstall, not from a backup... WHS does activate, but I didn't have any problems doing so. Maybe if you change the MoBo but not with changing out all the drives and reinstalling everything from scratch...
Dell Refunds Customer's Money After He Refuses Windows
Posted 10/20/2009 at 03:30:18am
I prefer to install my own OS anyway... I would love to order a box the EXACT way that I want it from Dell without paying their premium prices. I like some of their cases and configurations, but I don't like that everything you add (2Gb of ram for $87 - really??, or add 250Gb to a 250Gb HDD for $100 - really??) costs so much - including OEM installs of Windows with bloatware. As long as hardware drivers are published, give us the freedom to do what we want with our computers... HP, ACER, Lenovo, MAC, Toshiba, ASUS, etc. take note here...
...sell me a 10" netbook without an OS for $199, I'll put my own on it!!
Maybe I should start a company that tailors toward the 'power user' - configured the EXACT way you want it!
How to Build a Kick-Ass Windows Home Server

I have been running WHS since the Beta release and have to say that I'm quite happy with it. I have played with freeNAS and some other Linux Server Distro's and have to say that they are nice, but WHS is much better for my non-tech savvy family members. I currently run user profiles, back up all the machines (9) on my network and it integrates (now with SP2) seemlessly with my PS3, X360, Vista MCE, Windows 7, and my networked Yamaha Receiver... I own Windows Server 2003 and 2008 (Dreamspark - from when I was working on my BSIT) but haven't even gotten around to installing them to play with because WHS does what I need it to do...
While I love open-source and Linux, WHS has a few bells and whistles that i have come to love... I have my server set up as network drives (Mapped out as X, T, U, V, W (Music, Software, Documents, Videos, Pictures)). With the My Movies addin (from this article) I am reconfiguring my movies folder (was using TVersity and/or the regular Windows interface). I have about 400 movies re-ripped (thank you AnyDVD and HANDBRAKE) to MP4 to stream anywhere in my house (wireless and gig-wired). My SilverStone, C2Duo, 4gb, 4TB home build (around $900 shipped (living in Germany) with case) works amazingly well... I'm not sure I like the fact that I have to put each movie in its own folder, but I guess that comes with the territory - I like the interface of My Movies...
I'm not a big supporter of Windows (I HATE VISTA!!! ESPECIALLY UAC) but I have to say this is one thing Microsoft got right. I have been testing the Win7RC (and Beta's) and am looking forward to a more seemless integration of files over the network... I haven't played around with Ubuntu on the PS3 to see if that works with my WHS yet - maybe I'll try that this weekend...
Anyone evening thinking of picking up WHS should download the trial and test it out on older hardware - trust me, it brings a certain peace of mind to know that ALL of your computers are backed up; especially if you have more than one...and especially if you have kids that like to "mess" with their computers...

Microsoft Wants You to Party Hardy for Windows 7
Posted 09/03/2009 at 03:14:18pm
What a bummer... I would have totally thrown a bash for some military folks over here in Germany where I live... We always can find a reason to party - what better way then with a new OS coming out...more reasons to drink frothy beverages....
Make Your Own Blu-Ray Laser Keychain!

I wonder what kind of laser radiation that thing gives off...especially since ever DVD player I have ever opened up has a warning about exposure to it... Cool mod, but I'm just saying....
