Hulu's Free Ride May Soon be Over

Posted 06/04/2009 at 07:52:32pm

They don't believe in giving anything away for free, so I'm not surprised.  My guess is that paid subsriptions would get you all of the current season and newer seasons not currently available on Hulu.  The rationale for them not being available is that they'll canabalize DVD sales.

The problem with that thought (IMHO) is that the people that buy seasons want to own the media and that Hulu is a streaming site with commercials.  I doubt you'd see big differences in dvd sales if you offered all the episodes all the time. Plus they miss out on the ad revenue for people that want to see a missed episode.  Wishing Bit Torrent doesn't exist isn't going to make it go away.

Heree's to hoping they figure it out eventually.

Microsoft's New Ad Campaign: Owning a Mac in a Recession is Totally Uncool

Posted 04/07/2009 at 08:20:56pm

When my iMac G5 died recently, after being on and running for about five years straight, I replaced it with another iMac, for only a bit more than $1000 I might add.

Why? Easy, first I could walk out of the store, take it home and plug it in and it worked and didn't come with any bloatware.  Second, it is the computer my wife and kids use to surf the internet and handle e-mail, so I didn't need a game rig and not running Windows gives me a lot of virus protection - my 7 year old knows not to click on everything, but his 4 year old brother doesn't.  Thirdly, the computer can't take up a lot of space and has to look good and the iMac has a high WAF (wife acceptance factor).  Finally is customer service - I've had a few problems with Apple products over the years, but I live near an Apple Store.  I book an appointment and someone looks at the device, no charge.  I find having actual technical help a refreshing change.  One of the problems was a dead HDD, which I replaced myself, after the tech helped me save the recent photos I hadn't backed up.

I'm also not a fan boy, I plan on building my home office rig this month and I'll spend twice what I did on the Mac, but I don't mind being my own tech support on that machine.  My point is that while fitting into a budget is nice for some people, others won't mind spending more for perceived value.  The Apple name has value to people and ignoring it is silly.  Running an ad calling those of us that own one stupid is even sillier.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

7 HTML Tags You Should NEVER Use Again

Posted 04/07/2009 at 05:58:38pm

I make no claim to actually know anything about html coding, but I deal with far more arcane matters on a daily basis so I have to ask - what does <strong> do other than bold the text and make it more accessable to screen readers?  Because if it is nothing else then why not make screen readers treat <b> like it does <strong>?

Just because its old doesn't make it bad.  Like I said I know nothing about html, so if there is more to the story I would like to hear it.

Thanks,

Is There an Even Bigger Security Hole in Windows 7's UAC?

Posted 02/06/2009 at 11:31:17am

Why should the levels be accessable to change by a program at all?

Your security level should be one of those things that is a very manual process.  After all most people only set it once and forget about it.

Is There an Even Bigger Security Hole in Windows 7's UAC?

So we shouldn't worry about how easy it si for a program to change the security settings because the maleware filter is "perfect"?  Oh yeah, I like that idea.

Study: 200+ Kid-Targeted Virtual Worlds Currently in Development

Posted 01/28/2009 at 12:54:21pm

I have three kids under the age of 8 and they have been online for the last few years.  Sites like Webkinz and Club Penguin are very popular with the grade school crowd.  These are kids that learn to type at the same time they learn to write, so the push to a micro-transaction service isn't that surprising.  Parents may not shell out for a subscription for the little ones, but an occasional treat is something a parent might buy the tykes.

That said, the lead sentence is correct, know the sites your kids visit and monitor their use, in person as much as possible.  Teaching them safe surfing is going to be a part of the parental ambit.

Of course it does, I bet they have a huge percentage of newsstand sales.  Plus the advertisers are marketing to a very narrow group looking to spend money.  It's an easy sale for the ad side.

The first time my wife was pregnant she came home with four books and three magazines.  I think she even subscribed to Pregnancy for a year or two.

Can't you see the "look at me" opportunities in the iWatch?  Assuming they don't just go the iGlasses way with the same tech I guess.  More posers for Gordon to hate on either way.
