Microsoft Denies Rumors of NSA Backdoor in Windows 7

Posted 11/20/2009 at 05:29:33pm

Thanks to all the gossip, rumors, exaggerations, and out right lies (like this one) over the years, public support for a key intelligence agency is waning. The NSA is going to become the most crippled and useless intelligence agency in the whole world. We are less safe thanks to bs “rumors” like this.

Windows 7 OEM EULA Excludes Home Builds not for Resale

Posted 11/16/2009 at 12:06:47am

...as many suggested; This may just be a minor revision and doesn't fundamentally change the meaning...
but they specifically omitted "Unless the end user is actually assembling his/her own PC, in which case, that end user is considered a system builder as well." It's not like they rewrite the EULA from scratch. They edit the previous ones to deal with new contingencies and newly discovered loopholes. They also clean up the language to remove any possible ambiguity that might create loopholes.

But consider this: The first version of Windows was supposed to take 6 man-years to develope; but it took 80 man-years to ship a product. They still sold it for $100 a pop back in 1985, and they couldn't price it any higher. Though it had many of the features we take forgranted today, it still was basically a dos shell.

Adjust $100 1985 dollars for inflation and you get $200 in today's dollars. Obviousily Windows 7 is much more sophisticated than Windows 1. But still, Windows 1 did not include dos if I recall, so it would be the equivalent of an upgrade license, not a retail or oem license. A Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade cost $110.

I'm of course ignoring Buisness or Ultimate, but traditionally there where only two versions of windows back in the day... NT and not-NT; 98SE and 2000; xp home and xp pro; the concept of a "home basic" or an "ultimate" is fairly new, so the comparison between the price of a Windows 1.0 upgrade and 7 Home Premium upgrade is fair.

Just think about it. You give more to your telecom each year than you give to the developers at Microsoft. You give more to your utilities each year and spend more on clothes each year than you spend on microsoft products. Maybe it is time to pay a little more.

Microsoft has Patented "sudo." Yes, the Command

Posted 11/13/2009 at 01:52:16pm

They aren't patenting the SUDO command. They are making a patent for their privilage elevation. Of course they are going to reference alternatives. I read an MSDN blog article highlighting the difference between sudo and UAC.

The author of this article needs to do some rewording.

AT&T Tries to Get Verizon "Map for That" Ads Pulled From the Air

Posted 11/12/2009 at 07:02:54pm

Guess where AT&T mobile's headquarters are. Atlanta. In the state of Georgia (I lived in the atlanta metro area a year ago) judges are typically elected instead of nominated and approved by the local congress. Elected officials, Judges included, no doubt have their campaign treasuries filled with corporate donations. Georgia tends to be very "pro-business", which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

But this... this reeks of venue shopping. AT&T has been incredibly generous to me in my current unemployed state, so I don't plan on switching from them anytime soon, even though I specifically elected not to go on a contract. (I paid for my phone up front.)

Nonetheless, this behavior is simply wrong.

I don't quite understand the advantage of Grey-to-Grey timing over Black-to-White-to-Black timing.

How do you know that the manufactures are measuring from the same grey levels?

This is discussing the color range, not the format. The input color format (YUV, RGB) is irrelevant, because it is always converted to RGB in the end.

Rupert Murdoch: Expect to See News Corp Media Removed from Google

Posted 11/09/2009 at 06:23:19pm

So many major webservices are simply not profitable. Youtube is a glaring example. Of those that are, many of them funded by ad-click-following pyramid schemes, the latest "accai berry shocking news", and fake ad-clicks (what I like to call “click masturbation”.) Hosting “user generated content” in the cloud, or any content in the cloud has costs, and there needs to be effective means to pay for those costs. Apparently the $300+ a month that people spend on communication (I’m including the cell phone, the cable plan, etc…) isn’t enough to cover more than the cost of connecting to content.
