Ninite is worth using if for no other reason than staying on top of Flash, Java, and .Net updates on multiple computers with just the click of a button. Easily one of my new favorite sites.

Google Issues Cease and Desist Letter to Android ROM Modder
Posted 09/25/2009 at 03:55:50pm
As a user of the Cyanogen mod, I'd say Google needs to lighten up and cut this guy a check. If I couldn't run this guy's firmware, I'd probably switch back to another phone. The original OS that came on this phone was kind of slow to begin with, but feels like running in syrup compared to how speedy this guy's ROM is. I'd be interested to see what wouuld happen if Google had some developers with the talent and fan base that this guy has.

I bet this phone looked much more impressive with the screen turned off. That bezel around the screen just makes it look smaller.
The Game Boy: Gamers' Favorite Copout
Posted 08/27/2009 at 12:09:38pm
This article wasn't necessarily about just gay rights. It's about the fact that every time a game raises controversy, we all just hide behind saying "It's just a game." Imagine if the New York Times ran an article that got everyone all pissed off about something, regardless of topic, and when they were confronted about it, they said "Come on, it's just a newspaper." This had almost nothing to do with gay rights as a specific topic, and everything to do with taking our medium seriously. People will boycott movies made by directors they're adamantly against, or that are about topics they're not okay with, but when it comes to games, we let all that drop and are okay with it by dismissing it as 'just a game.' If gamers want games to be taken seriously as an art form or an accepted medium of conveying something more than just wasted time, then we should start with us. Next time a controversial game or developer comes out with something that stirs up a fuss, instead of dismissing it, stand up for it like it were any other medium out there.
Game Theory: MicroBucks

I'm not sure about every type of game out there, but I'd be willing to pay 5 or 10 bucks for a Counter Strike: Source 'booster pack.' Maybe even like 15 if they released some upgraded textures, a few new guns, and maybe some more character models and official maps just so long as everything was balanced for those people who didn't pay the extra. It wouldn't make the game unplayable for those that didn't want to pay it, but it's an easy way for a company to extend the life of a game.
Rumor: Microsoft Plans to Counter Android, iPhone with Two Mobile OSes
Posted 08/20/2009 at 08:56:30am
Here's the problem with closed source OSes: Windows Mobile 7 might come out initially beating Android since Microsoft apparently thinks they can beat Android with just 6.5. However, any cool new features that come out on 7 Mobile are just going to be ported over to Android within a month or two once the bugs are ironed out. I just don't see something with as robust a community as Android has being bested for too long if there are really features out there worth having.
How to Run Windows Software (and Games) on Linux with Wine
Posted 08/06/2009 at 02:25:47pm
Also, it might be worth mentioning that there are games out there that natively support Linux. I was going back through some of my older games and I noticed that Unreal 2k4 as well as the new Unreal have linux based installers so you don't have to use Wine, Cedega or anything else like that. So if you like the games, support the companies that do recognize that you might use a non-windows OS, and we might just get to see more titles like that.
Microsoft Admits Linux OS is Competition

I use Ubuntu on my work PC as well, though I find myself having to RDC into a Windows box every time I want to access ADUC or similar windows administration tools. I love the interface and I love how fast it all runs, but unless there's tools out there I'm missing, I still need Windows machines to do almost every part of my job, it's just how I'm accessing them that's changing.
