Microsoft has Patented "sudo." Yes, the Command
Posted 11/13/2009 at 01:27:31pm
I'm no expert on US patent law either, but I'm gathering that they are patenting the GUI and user interaction aspects of UAC. I don't think they are actually patenting sudo and account elevation, I think they are patenting their UAC watchdog version of on the fly account elevation.
Microsoft has Patented "sudo." Yes, the Command

From what I've read Microsoft is only patenting their implementation of sudo ie. User Account Control that they intoroduced in Windows Vista and now Windows 7. The patent filing makes clear that there are pre-existing implementations of user account elevation in other operating systems.

Just read Ars Technica and DigiTimes and steal their articles. That's what the current writers seem to do. Most of the articles on this site are here one or two days after I've already read them somewhere else (usually with references to where I read them the first time).
Windows 7 Upgrade Editions Will Require an Activated Copy for Verification Each Time its Installed

Maybe Microsoft should learn a lesson from Electronic Arts. If they just make disc copies and pirated versions work as betas/basic installations and activation unlocks the full OS then pirating wouldn't be such a huge problem for them. It would also allow users to provide "proof of purchase" of a previous installation AFTER installing Windows 7 as it would just be unlocking the blocked content. They could just ask for your previous installation disc to be inserted or for your previous activation key. Why make it harder than it needs to be?

So by that reasoning then Linux and Firefox should no longer be free because they aren't competing with MS on a level playing feild? Linux is using free software to steal cheapskate users from buying MS software!

Finally they have 64-Bit Vista support for the AVIVO package, but where is the Windows 7 support? Since Windows 7 is built on Vista it should not be that hard for them to port the package for us early adopters. Since AMD doesn't seem to give a shit about all of us using Windows 7, does anyone know if the Vista x64 AVIVO package will install/work with Windows 7 x64?
