Boxee Gets New Funding to Keep Being Awesome

http://www.google.com/search?btnG=1&pws=0&q=browser+based
If you say browser based espically with a hypen, like in the article, anyone who breaths through their nose will associate that term with a Web Browser.
I understand there are other types of browers, but the term Browser-based specifically refers to Web Browsers. Don't be pedantic.
Boxee Gets New Funding to Keep Being Awesome

"he money keeps rolling in for Boxee, a browser-based streaming media service who managed to attract $4 million last November."
A Browser-based media service? What are you smoking? Can I have some?
I know its hard to keep up with technology and terms, but browser-based usually means its a web-app that runs inside a web browser.
Now I know boxee added its own built-in browser to try and stream hulu, but that doesn't mean its browser-based.
Are you guys playing buzzword bingo in the office and who ever gets the most buzzwords into their articles wins?
Mozilla Handing Out Jetpacks, Not What You Think

Yup becuase hackers can also install add-ons to your browser without you doing anything. DOH.
This is just a new way of doing add-ons. My guess is a new type of xpi file, (maybe a new extension) will only contain .html, .js and .css files which can be installed and refreshed without requiring a browser restart. They will still need user interaction to get onto the pc in the first place.
9 Amazing Software Mashups - Killer Free Apps that Work Better Together

Did you try setting Hamachi to use a specific port for tunneling?
Pref > Status > Detailed Config button. Then set ports under the Connecting thru NAT, then make sure the firewall is forwarding those ports to the box running hamachi.
I had one site that needed to have ports entered, and forwared from the router. Home, Office, and Job site 1 all see each other just fine, but Job site 2 needed to have specific ports set. The idea of sending VNC traffic in plain text is way to scary.
How To: Customize and Streamline Your Windows Desktop

So I have Vista at home and there are 3 things I love about vista.
The new Address bar in Vista's Explorer. Bring it to XP using QT Address Bar

The single click on the clock to pull up a calendar. Bring it to XP with LClock.

The real-time thumbnails you get when mousing over a window on the tab bar. Rocket Dock or Object Dock can do this.
If you customize windows, add these to XP to make it better.
Pro Sports Feel Piracy Pressure

I haven't used these services so this is just a guess.... but if someone is streaming a game live.... wouldn't commercials be included?
Wouldn't that mean more ad revenu if the major leagues offered their own live feed?
Gmail Vulnerability Could Let Hackers Redirect Your Email

Is this just a new application of the cookie hijacking that has already been disclosed? Go into your Gmail settings -> General Tab. Look for Browser connection and check Always use HTTPS If your extra paranoid, get Firefox and NoScript. NoScript can set cookies to be secure only. That means the cookie will only be sent over a secure (https) connection. For someone to steal my GMAIL_AT cookie, they need to be using a ssl site.
Employees Sue Over Boot-Time Paycuts
Posted 11/24/2008 at 02:57:34pm
I believe the problem is that the employees need to punch in using software on the PC. PC not on, not able to punch in. The problem with taking 15-30 minutes to boot up. Is some BOFH copying the users documents over to the PC each time it boots up? Maybe a complete virus scan before the user can log in?
AVG Update Inadvertently Cripples Windows XP
Posted 11/12/2008 at 09:53:04am
I'm glad I left AVG after version 7.0 and switched to Avast on my XP machine. I hated the changes they made to AVG 7.0 free edition including that ridiculous google search result scanner. Who thought it would be a good idea to scan every single link in case the user clicked on it. The moment I saw that I had to disable the firefox addon AVG installed without my permission. Then after 1 day of annoying popups from AVG I simply uninstalled it. Last month at work I had a scare with McAfee detecting wm_hooks.dll (from RealVNC) as a possible virus. Its a pain to talk a client thru ignoring the scary virus warning over the phone since I couldn't log into the PC. I'm lucky I didn't have it happen to 1000s of PCs like some other McAfee users. On another note, is an Anti-Virus needed in Vista? I have UAC turned on, along with Windows Defender. In the past my wife has gotten our XP machine infected 2x, both due to user error. Both times it was something stupid like "Download and run this .exe to view this locked myspace profile". The next time it was "download and run this .exe to view this movie clip". Once was when I was running AVG and it failed to stop the virus install, but told me about it after the fact. The next one was Avast failing to stop the virus install but telling me about it after the fact. Both times I didn't need the anti-virus software telling me I had a virus because it was so obvious. With UAC, Windows Defender, Auto-Updates running and Autoplay turned off I don't know how I would get infected unless its a)user error, which anti-virus has shown worthless against to me or b)an unknown/unpatched vulnerability, which I also think the anti-virus software would fail to stop the install like in the past.
Gmail Gets Auto-Replies with "Canned Responses" Feature
Posted 10/24/2008 at 03:33:15pm
What happens when my auto-canned response gets an auto-canned response from you which makes me send out another auto-canned response.... Thats happened to me with Lotus notes at my old job where an email with many recipients had 2 people on vacation at the same time. For some reason Lotus notes did a reply all instead of just a reply for its auto respond.
