Building a Rig? Don't Forget the Playstation 3 Cell Processor Add-In Card!
Posted 10/02/2008 at 05:35:14pm
I would absolutely love to hear the logical argument of why I would ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever spend more than $50-$60 on something like this when it doesn't natively do 3D gaming. I have a card that does everything this card does but mine also does HD gaming in DX9, DX10, and OpenGL. Can their card do any of that? No? Then what's the point? I see this card dying off more quickly and painfully than Ageia's PhysX PCI cards. That is unless they begin to market it as a full (see: actual) video card by today's standards.

W-A-S-D: DRM Or No Game At All? Pick Your Poison
Posted 09/30/2008 at 10:34:11am
How about if instead of pirating, of which the cost outways the value, you buy the DRM-filled game and then find the DRM crack and apply that. You paid for the game. It's yours. Why don't you just keep your physical copy (and even a receipt) to show proper legal ownsership if big brother ever tries to knock down your door and call you a pirate. I work hard for my money so I want to get the most out of every game purchase. I can't do anything if a PC game I purchased just straight up sucks (no decent return policies on PC games), but I can apply what I believe to be a legal workaround so that I can install my favorite games over and over again without worries of my "rental expiring".
I didn't rent the game! I purchased it! I bought it with my own money! IT'S MINE EA, NOT YOURS! Not anymore. Not after I walked out of the store with it clasped legally between my digits. Same to you music and movie companies! Same to you!

Ominous Study: Kids Using Cell Phones Five Times More Likely to Get Cancer
Posted 09/23/2008 at 05:07:02pm
Drinking a bottled water that went from cool or cold to warm or hot with the cap closed may lead to cancer and/or other illnesses, even if the water is back to cool when you drink it. Yummy right? I love my tap water and all it's wonderfulness (even the trace amounts of prescription and non-prescription medicines and vitamins recently found in it).

Windows 7, Milestone 3
Posted 09/18/2008 at 04:18:12pm
I think I just realized what the next version of Windows is going to be called when released to the public (although I like the "7" name). "Next". That's right, even the Gates/Seinfeld commericals hint at it.
WINDOWS NEXT
The better more lean version of Vista and what Vista was supposed to be since 2002~ish :) :P

Samsung the Cynic: Blu-Ray Only Has Five Years Left, Suckers!
Posted 09/04/2008 at 03:34:32pm
So just to clarify, Samsung believes that the successor to Blu-Ray, in terms of the biggest seller for Samsung, is OLED. They are saying that within the next 5 years Samsung will be more focused and more reliant on the sales of OLED devices than Blu-Ray devices.
"Strangely, Samsung believes that the next big thing after Blu-ray Disc for the company won’t be another media format, but rather a new generation of television technology – specifically OLED displays." - Tom's Hardware
^^^ emphasis added ^^^
Please do not start thinking that OLED by itself could ever do anything more than display your movie.

Gaming Roundup 8/25/08: Freedom from F.E.A.R.

"The developer didn't intend you to experience the game that way" - Really?
So how do you explain that when you type in "God" (or whatever your favey is) into some games via the 'dev mode cheat' it does nothing but on other games it makes you invincible. It is because the developers HAD to put in the code to allow cheats to work on the game. They had to PURPOSELY input the ability to have the ~ console (or whatever method they choose to use) accept certain words to modify certain aspects of the gameplay. I don't have to download a crack or mod or anything. I just have to type in words into an unmodified game.
"The developer didn't intend you to experience the game that way" - False!

Kingston Launches 32GB SDHC Card
Posted 08/13/2008 at 12:54:56pm
I think you are all missing the point (see: awesome potential). Look to the not too distant future with me here. A $600 laptop could easily have the following specs within the next decade (prob much sooner though):
8 core cpu/gpu running at 2.6 GHz on each core (4 cpu cores, 4 gpu cores)
128GB Hard Drive/RAM combo via an SDHC card emedded onto the motherboard
mobo has onboard cpu/gpu/ram/storage(hdd)/audio/usb/esata/hdmi out/etc
9" to 15" oled screen
total weight - 1/8 of macbook air at heaviest
And if you don't think this is possible you must not be a regular MaximumPC reader or someone who follows tech trends at all. Very realistic. Look where we were 10, 15, and 20 years ago. Aha, see?

Asus Announces a Wii Nunchuck-Like Wireless Gaming Controller
Posted 08/07/2008 at 02:29:27pm
There is no point for anyone that likes to game on the PC to own an Eee anything. If Asus sold this by itself at a reasonable price (same or less than Wii version) with full compatibility on any game with no 'special' (see: buggy) software/drivers needed, then I and most likely everyone else would buy it out of morbid curiosity. Come on Asus, you make amazing motherboards for us, why do you have to be so 5t00p1d about this? Are you trying to tell us you don't like us enthusiast gamers anymore? Hmmm....maybe I'll get an MSI mobo next time >:(

Gaming Roundup 8/6/08: Yo-ho, yo-ho
Posted 08/07/2008 at 11:25:36am
Agreed.
For those who don't give a care about dealing with online play, a PC game's singleplayer should be $20-$30 tops and sometimes free. If that requires ads (or MORE ads for some games) then so be it. Why are games like Assassin's Creed, which ONLY has singleplayer, the same price as games like Crysis or COD4 that have an amazing single player and an equally great multiplayer? Greed. That's about it. If a friend of mine offers me an ISO of a game that I was considering purchasing, then I will most likely accept it. I refuse to download anything that might be deemed illegal.
Being married definitely DOES hurt most (not all) gamer's budgets. My wife thinks $20 is better spent on new pants than another game she knows I'll be bored of within 1-2 months. $50 game? F**k that, I don't want to get THE LOOK.
"3. ......haven't played more then 2 hours into a game in probably 10 years....." - Same here with the exception of the copy of Assassin's Creed my friend gave me and the legally purchased copy of Crysis that I whooped on several times over. That's right, I bought a game even AFTER having a successfully cracked ISO of it in my hands. I just thought it was good enough to pay for (got THE LOOK for it too).
Your 4th point is extremely valid. Although I do not download full games myself, I find it ridiculous that you LITERALLY can download a full 8.4GB ISO of a new game in the time it takes a 'demo website' to allow you to download a 650MB demo.
Your other thoughts. Point 1 - FarCry: Best and worst decision by Ubisoft. Best for releasing it free with ads. Worst for taking it away from us (Still really ticked about it). Point 2 - nVidia, AMD/ATI, Intel, etc have no reason to care about piracy because they don't sell games. Their bottom line is only hurt if no one buys (or steals) any games. They don't care how you get it because as long as you have a game you have a reason to 'need' a new cpu or gpu.
Reality that corporations will never admit out loud: PIRACY WILL NEVER (AND CAN NEVER) BE STOPPED. It's a technical impossibility. Make your games worth the money you charge and I will buy it. I can't speak for anyone else, but I'll pay for it if I think it's actually worth it (pretty small list).
