Windows 7 Upgrade Guide for RC (Release Candidate) Users

Posted 10/26/2009 at 11:09:17pm

I have to say thank you for this article! Due to my financial situation right now, I won't be upgrading from the Win7 64bit RC I've been running since it released for a while yet. However, I've been working on a solution to get my scanning functions to work on my HP c4580 AIO printer. I'd been able to get printing to work fine with limited drivers I could find on HP's site, but no scanning capability. With Win7's official release, I decided to check HP again for a specific driver meant for my system and sure enough it was there... Except it will not install on my older version of Windows 7. It errors out saying I must have version 7600 or newer to install this driver. Then I remembered this article and did some digging. Sure enough, I found what I needed in the Autorun file, similar to what you describe in this article, and changing the 7600 to 7100 in two different lines has netted me properly working drivers and software for my printer. I've always been a hardware guy, so this area was very new to me, but it worked like a charm.

Thanks again!

John

Why does this sound like someone really liked the T-1000 from Terminator 2?

I had no trouble with their signup... I'm not using it. Sorry, but no X-wing, no Star Wars. I play Galaxies for the space combat, which requires skill not button mashing ability, and I don't see TOR doing anything like that at all. Throw in the big ol' FU we pc gamers got over Force Unleashed, and I'm just not interested in this. Feel free to take my slot...

That is indeed the best way to run cleaning utilities on any pc. Also, you might want to clean out cookies and temp files as that's where a lot of the infected files like to hide and it will shorten scan times if you happen to have a lot of files in those areas.

Release Notes: Sometimes It's Good to Buy the Extended Warranty

Posted 09/15/2009 at 10:15:29pm

I understand your pain, Will.  When I read the article recommending to not buy extended warranties, I took it with a grain of salt, as I was working at Best Buy's Geek Squad at the time. MaxPC is directly responsible for my technical prowes, which made me capable of landing a tech job without going to school. I even took issues to work with me for reference on the job. I left GS 2 years ago this month after 4+ years, and to this day I'm still the only one in my old store to get food, like cookies & strawberry cupcakes, from customers on a regular basis. They were so loyal that my coworkers nicknamed them the Fan Club. But it was hard to go with your recommendation on extended warranties. Because I'd seen so many people that couldn't afford repairs on whatever device they had, that I would have been able to help if they did have the warranty. Don't get me wrong, they warranties can be a hit or miss thing, especially depending on who's selling it or what it's for, but in some cases, like your phone or a laptop battery/power supply, they work. People just need to do some research and make a good informed decision. And don't just take for granted what the salesman tells you about the warranty...

I ran into this a few years ago when I was building a new Intel 965 system. Fortunately, I'd just read about slipstreaming SP2 into my vanilla XP Pro disk in Max PC and wanted to try it out. Not only did the article work perfectly for me, but so did the new XP disk it made.

Do You Have What it Takes to be on the Geek Squad? (Yes, You Do)

Posted 08/11/2009 at 08:00:44pm

I used to be Geek Squad, though I started before they adopted the Geek Squad brand, and got in there the hard way... by reading MaxPC and learning to do it myself.

Unfortunately, so many wannabe Techs see Geek Squad as a launching point to get into the IT profession, but they have no real skills, inspite of a degree or two. Had to work with one guy that claimed two degrees in Computer Sciences, still I had to show him how to run a defrag on an HP made Windows XP system and how to install extra RAM in it... But he'd always brag about his degrees...

It was so bad, that we finally pushed though some interview questions so that we could avoid any more of those guys. Our favorite was "What kind of computer do you own?", and if we got something like "It's an HP.", instead of "It's an (proc), with (amount of ram), ect...", then we'd just pass on him. It was meant to check if the person knew his hardware that they owned, instead of someone bringing nothing to the table, like the guy with the degrees and it was only in the store I worked in. It didn't last, because BB wanted more salesmen and fewer actual knowledgeable techs, and I had to get out of there after over 4 years, but it did have the value of being good experience. Even if it was kind of like trial by fire, times 1000...
