Freeware Files: Turn your PC to Self-Cleaning Mode, and More!
Posted 09/01/2009 at 07:37:17am
The belvedere stuff can all be done with a simple script and a scheduled task. Now, the USB drive fresher could be useful. My USB stick is like a manwhore it does not discriminate. Going cross platform puts a ton of 'hidden' files on the root of the drive; shoot many windows pc's do the same thing.
I suppose a script could be written to clear these files as well but depending on the footprint of this program it may be worth while.
I don't see much advantage to Process Hacker over the Sysinternals Process Explorer that has been around for years.
The Manic Time results could be disturbing and possibly better not talked about. :)
Byte Rights: Kindling Our Desires

Sadly, I don't have a kindle. I think the concept is cool and may go get one soon. What I really want to know is who gave Quinn the shiner?

Other than the numbers I honestly don't see the difference.

Western Digital 1TB MyBook World Edition
Posted 08/24/2009 at 01:23:26pm
For those this is aimed at WD has done a great job in making remote storage almost foolproof. I like the iTunes and Twonky features especially. This would be something I could ship to mom, call her on the phone, and talk her through setting up without wanting to do great bodily harm to myself and others.
That said, the "non-user serviceable" part really brings this down. If I buy a 1TB unit and want to upgrade the drive to a faster unit or one with a little more storage I should be able to do so. I have a couple other MyBook drives and always lay them down, they look cooler standing but I could see the people in the office knocking it over 4 times a day.

But it will have a new name and a subscription fee for updates attached to it. Be afraid, be vary afraid...
Oracle Founder Joins the Elite $1 Salary Club
Posted 08/24/2009 at 11:58:13am
If his salary last year of $1M was only 1.2% of the total compensation package he will still bring home over $98M in fiscal 2009/2010.
I harbor no ill will but damn, that must be nice. :)
HighPoint RocketRAID 2640x4

Looking at the numbers above I don't think I would bother with this card for a RAID 0. IF you are going RAID 5 I can see the advantage but for a ~10% performance increase on RAID 0 it hardly seems practical.

The SAS drives are not really what makes a bulk of the noise; it's those pesky high speed fans. The downside to SAS for the home user is cost/GB. Hardly anyone outside of the Enterprise is going to pay $150 for a 72GB drive that you need to buy 3 or more of in order to take advantage of increased performance.
There's Way More to Linux than Ubuntu: 8 Distros Compared
Posted 05/07/2009 at 09:32:56am
I just finished a rant about the fact that so much attention is paid to Ubuntu and many other very good releases are neglected.
Thank You for this article. No one is going to agree with everything but with the varying levels of skill and knowledge out there this was a good high level overview. Here are a couple of my favorites:
Fedora (currently 9)
Elive
Debian
