How to Run Windows Software (and Games) on Linux with Wine

Posted 08/06/2009 at 10:49:54am

I use Codeweaver's CrossOver Games on an Apple Mac Pro and it works great for me.  I see the $40 to buy it as an investment in the Wine Project. For all the fun in TF2 I have, it is worth it!

I only play TF2 with semi-low graphics settings, which is fine for me -- I don't need to see myself flaming in high-res.  i'm sure I could tweak the settings.  It certain beats rebootig or having another machine just for gaming.

100th No BS Podcast Spectacular: Nathan's New PC (The Apologies in Advance Edition)

... a few minutes into the singing, I realized it was supposed to be there (and not an accidental overmix from the FutureUS secret microphone location in the office on Let's Act Wacky Wednesday.  As soon as i heard Gordon, I knew it wasn't a mistake).  Once i got out of the mindset of my everyday job (dealing with computers, networking, troubleshooting ... basically things they talk about normally), I thought this was an interesting twist and certainly special.

For the people who are complaining about it ... Number 1: be thankful it lasted only 22 minutes ... and 2: at least they didn't decide to use Pink Floyd's The Wall as their musical base!

And considering Veronica was part of the finale, the Staff figured there would be a significant amount of backlash, so they put it all out there.  (Veronica must read the forum posts and comments as well because she was right on!)

And yes, a Brass Balls Award (and the equivalent guts award to the ladies) to the entire staff and everyone involved for doing it!  It certainly broke up my routine (M' yeah...about those TPS reports ...)

Plus ... I think there was an Elvis sighting at 20:10.  Too bad there wasn't a Murphy sighting :-(  He could have been in the NewEgg warehouse reconstructing Fort Murphy.

I know I'll be laughing next time i visit NewEgg :-)

That is an awesome crack!  I also enjoyed the reference to that other Will Smith guy.  Still chuckling to myself.

For the 100th episode, that was totally unexpected...and very enjoyable!  A+

According to the outtakes, it sounds like a script actually exists.  Will that be given away via Twitter sometime soon?

No BS Podcast #99: This Episode is a Palindrome

Posted 03/31/2009 at 08:21:17pm

Since we are on the cusp of the 100th episode, I would just like to take a moment and acknowledge one of the most clairvoyant individuals of our time ... Gordon Mah Ung ... of Gordon Ung's Futurist, LLC.

Back in September, Gordon announced the financial investment strategy known as the Canned Food and Ammo Fund (since the economy was beginning to melt down around us).

Reading a local newspaper the other day, I came across an article talking about how gun sales in the state of Pennsylvania are booming despite the economy being in the toilet (yes, they used the word booming).  I couldn't help but chuckle and say "Gordon was right!"

... I believe there was a short-lived upgrade to the 3.5" HD floppy called ED (extended? density) which doubled the capacity to 2.88MB (I bought a drive on a system I built, but never found disks).  Too bad ED didn't take off ... it would have taken my stack of Microsoft Office 95 installation floppies from 35 to about 18.  And I wouldn't have had to worry about floppy number 25 going bad and crapping out the install.  Ahh, the memories!

Circuit City's Liquidation "Sale" Still a Rip Off

Posted 01/27/2009 at 10:47:02am

Was at Circuit City over the weekend and found the Logitech Marble Mouse "marked down" to $16 ... so I went to buy two of them (home and office).  Got up the register, and the price came up at $26.  I told the cashier that they were marked at the shelf at $16.  Their response, "It must be mismarked .. we can't control that."  The mark down price was clearly in front of the right mouse.  The entire display of mice were marked down and all the tags were marked and lined up.  Oh well ... only got one at $26 .. which is about what I would have paid online with shipping.

A nationwide chain office supply business is also closing a store around here.  The prices were not that great there either.  Especially after a few weeks of being marked down 2 or 3 times.  It was amusing looking at the "Clearance" tag with the line printed on it "Final Price - no further reductions" ... yet the price was crossed out 2 times and lowered.

Not that it's a big deal, but the Podcast Number should be #85 ... unless of course a few zombies survived the last podcast and we need to do some cleanup ...

Looks like the downloaded file is numbered correctly.
