oh... my... GOD!

Maximum PC actually reviewing a Scythe product?

Great, now the world is going to come to an end... and I had plans!

Kudos on doing the review and hope to see many more in the future (fans, HDD coolers, other CPU heatsinks, etc)

Apple Keeps Fighting the Bad Fight; Locks Pre Out of iTunes Again

Posted 10/31/2009 at 07:39:31pm

The real fix is to "fix" Apple by not using their incredibly inferrior file format, stick to high bit rate MP3's or better still make the conversion to a "lossless" format (keep in mind there is no silver bullet, but there are innumerable better solutions than the evil that is VBR and/or AAC files!)

You can put whatever you darn well please on the phone, whether Apple likes it or not, by simply not going through Apple in the first place.

As to them "winning" the fight, well they've already lost it as far as "haxorz" are concerned... Apple's a Goliath, but there are thousands of Davids running about more than happy to throw rocks and some are going to hit no matter what measures Apple things they can put in the way.

Nintendo Biggie Sizes the Nintendo DSi with DSi XL

At current exchange rates, the expected street price in Japan is round about $220 or so for it... Keep in mind the Yen is currently stronger than the dollar (well the penny anyway)...

The odds are, due to the saturation of the DS in the U.S. it will likely come in at about the $200 mark here as well. I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest by $200-230 basically.

It's a cutting edge SIX core CPU with capability AMD's wet dreams couldn't even contend with, much less their fielded product... What do you expect it to cost? The best i7 is still weighing in at about $1,000 even now, and will likely only step down from that once its has been usurped by the i9 that would be effectively 50% MORE capable still... Yeah, how dare Intel charge what the market will bare for their product! DARN MARKET FORCES! how dare they use basic economics 101 against you like that... ⌐_⌐

Corsair Cooling Hydro Series H50 CPU Cooler

Posted 09/23/2009 at 05:31:47pm

Wow, took a while, but it finally came as requested, a review of the H50...

I've seen a LOT of coolers, and there are some that are better even on air, and even some high end liquid cooling solutions that aren't as good as what's available in the H50. This isn't to say it's the end-all and be-all of coolers, because it's not.

The H50 is for those that want to dip their toes into water cooling, but don't want to dive into the deep end all at once. It -IS- a very good cooler, make no bones about it, and for the vast majority of people it will quite easily do whatever you need it for with EASE, and even low to well into the mid-range overclocking.

If you're someone on the furthest fringes of overclocking, then of course you already have an answer and it's likely superior to the H50, but at the considerable cost of relative simplicity and ease of use.

For what it is, the H50 is AMONG the tip top coolers right now (not that I needed MaxPC to tell me, but it's nice they too have reviewed it). So while the testing methodology may be "wanting", the results are definitely good and with a push-pull fan it would have trounced the U120, even with it using a push pull of its own.

Now of course the caveats, if you already have a good air cooling methodology, the H50 does NOT warrant an upgrade because you're already nearly certain to not necessitate any additional cooling capability to begin with. If you -want it-, then buy it on those grounds, but don't do so under the mistaken belief that you HAVE to have it because you don't.

If you're about to build a new system, and plan to push your shiny new processor hard and fast, then the H50 is definitely a VERY strong contender for cheap, (relatively) easy, and extremely capable solutions available. Let it be known, other coolers can very easily be more friendly to install, but once it's in you're likely to not need to worry about it ever again anyway. So unless you're crunched for time, a little extra patience and a few more steps are hardly anything to be upset by, and anyone planning on using such a cooling method likely has a full tower anyway (Micro-ATX need not apply).

Super Talent Will Release First PCI Express RAIDDrive SSDs in Early October

Posted 09/17/2009 at 04:50:44pm

This device is NOT being marketed to the main-stream user here folks, let's get that striaght from the first sentence...

I  am not in the category for one of these either, I simply don't -need- it... However if one found its way to my door I would give it a home :D lol

This device is going to be the "first" mass produced and specifically developed device of its kind with the PCI-E interface specifically. While the first of its kind is clearly quite expensive, it's no more outrageous than the first 1x DVD-ROM drives, or the first 1x CD-ROM drives, or even the first SSD drives. But they were also the first of their kind, and at release were also NOT intended for the mainstream for quite some time.

Any new technology like this is going to take a couple of years, and additional competitors, to see great change in capacity, speed, capability, compatibility, and of course PRICE.

If you read the $1,000 price tag with disgust, then YOU are not the intended audience, neither am I, as well as the vast majority of users, they are (as the article noted mind you) focused only on the most ardent power-users and businesses that HAVE TO HAVE such capability to do what they do, and the price of admission is considered an expense worth contending with in order to reap the abilities there-of.

Rocksteady Thwarts Pirates with Gimped Version of Arkham Asylum

Posted 09/16/2009 at 04:47:42pm

First let's lay the ground rules:

Nobody gets to lie, particularly when all the evidence demonstrates otherwise.

Rocksteady hasn't thwarted anyone, they've only pretended to "purposely" bug a number of game features as copy protection, the catch is that those with LEGITIMATE COPIES had identical maladies to those without.

Next, "the scene" patched the game -BEFORE- rocksteady did... Let's make sure the class read that...

THE PIRATES FIXED THE GAME BEFORE THE DEVELOPER COULD!

Absolutely there are imbeciles that post on the message boards asking for support to a game that isn't even out yet, however there are people who got copies of the game off the shelf perfectly legit because the store stocked them early, even though technically they weren't supposed to.

Now, this isn't to say that piracy is good, but at the same time I'm not going to sit here and have a developer pee on my leg and insist it's raining. MaxPC, you have my support as always, but the whole story is just as important as getting it in before the deadline, a half truth is only worth a whole lie.

Are you simply ignorant or did you purposely say something to make yourself look foolish?

Has anyone been rounded up and systematically been put into specifically deligated ghetto areas based upon cultural, social, or religious grounds under the guise that it was to "protect them" from the public at large?

Then THAT is just how the hell I know, this asinine drivel that any one or either parties are Nazi's is moronic to the point that it is insulting to the people of the Warsaw ghettos, or the larger population of Jewish, Gypsy, among others who were rounded up en masse, herded into sectioned off corners of the city, and eventually sent to death camps!

Quit being a sniveling rabble rouser trying to elicit rage based upon the WRONG thing, and actually look at what these tyrants are actually doing.

They don't want to ethnically cleanse, they clearly want to grab control of as many as they can by any means necessary, so take exception with that, don't make things up based upon false analogies and ingnorant rhteoric you've been TOLD to believe.

You've clearly got a lot of education to catch up on, and until you're brain is at least <---------------> this big, you can't ride this ride...

NewsName one thing Governments do well, besides mistakes... on
Proposed Cybersecurity Bill Would Give the President Unprecedented Control Over the Internet

Posted 08/30/2009 at 08:10:36pm

The problem with having a government do anything, of ANY description, is that it by virtue of its design and function can not, and will not, do anything well.

Goverments are good for protecting the common good of the people from outside aggression, and beyond that they should have absolutely no role in the lives of the people, because any role they try to perform they will not do well.

The U.S. Government for instance excells in the destruction of money, more specifically they are by far the most efficient machine for obliterating YOUR money that has ever existed. Not only will they at some point take some 55% of your money even before you're able to spend it (OR MORE), you will -never- be able to see it back within your lifetime. Even if you get a fabulous tax return every year, you're still loosing your behind on the bargain because the government keeps far more than they ever give back, all to squander it on innumerable things they have no right within the constitution to be involved in, nor to put YOUR money into.

So if you want something destroyed, have uncle sam to it... But as the adage goes, if you want something done right DO IT YOURSELF! At the very least you should have the freedom to CHOOSE TO DO IT YOURSELF.

This era of usurpation of rights en masse is deeply disturbing, and should be to everyone regardless of your political affiliation. People need to grow up and get beyond routing for their "team", because regardless of whether or not you have a pin that says "Yes We Can", you're going to find out that "no you can't anymore" because that right has been abridged in favor of the tyrannical efforts of the government. Regardless of whether they have an (R) or (D) by their name, they aren't your friends when they are trying to financially enslave you to Washington D.C.'s whims.

All of the childish name calling and juvenile antics of BOTH SIDES need to be set aside and the reality of the situation must be assesed for what it is. There is no Hitler here, and a fourth reich is not in the works. No class or culture is being systematically rounded up into ghettos for "their protection", so all the Nazi name calling needs to stop as well.

However what is happening is that incredible greed and incompetence are conspiring together in Washington D.C. to make a tempest of leaders purposely and willfully disregarding those they supposedly represent in an effort to further their own ambitions, and to cede more power and control over the people of this nation to themselves.

Over 200 years ago they knew full well how corrupt a goverment can easily become, so they wrote the 10th ammendment very specifically:

"The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."

Note how it specifically says the powers NOT deligated to the United States are solely the domain of the States and the PEOPLE (you know, all those millions of folks that Congress are bribed by lobbyists to ignore), meaning in no uncertain terms, that the ONLY powers that the United States -TRULY- has are those expressly granted to it by the Constitution itself. Now of course the additional 17 ammendments -since- the bill of rights have long since dispensed with the supreme law of the land, so why should anyone in Congress worry about trampling on the people some more at this point.

As the old joke goes...

Politicians are like diapers, they should be changed often and for the same reasons...

Most would say "because they start to stink", I prefer to think it's "because they both become full of crap"

Stop voting for politicians words and start following their ACTIONS, don't pander to one faction or another, and most especially don't believe any of their promises.

How do you know when a politician is lying to you? Their lips are moving... And no, that wasn't a joke...
