Google Wants to Make it Easy for You to Leave Gmail

Posted 09/15/2009 at 02:45:08pm

This change will actually have me useing Google more. Ever since hearing horror stories of Yahoo deleting years and years of data with no warning because they thought some bodies beach pictures where porn, I've hesitated to rely on "the cloud"

I’m assuming with these tools I’ll be able to backup my data off line, and in such a way I can get at them with some other service.

Murphy's Law: LiberKey. GPL Violation or Sour Grapes?

Posted 07/31/2009 at 04:48:28pm

Thanks for the write up Dave. I'd heard rumors of this argument and was glad to get the whole store.
 Two thoughts:

1. It does sound like maybe LiberKey's developers are trying to take credit for other peoples work. Obviously that's bad, those people spent a lot of time to donate something to the community.

2. What at mess! Assume you have an idea for packaging some free or open source applications together to bring value to the community. Good Lord, why bother! If you are going to end up in a hornets nest of "you logo's are to small" and "you have to use our installer" and "your sharing the source code wrong “why bother? It sounds like for every hour you spend developing code you spend 2 hours reading licensing agreements. Doesn't this defeat the purpose of open source software?

I'm assuming LiberKey isn't selling their product. I say cut the developers some slack.

TF2 Spy vs. Sniper Update Live - Brings New Methods of Unlocking Items, Also Urine

Posted 05/22/2009 at 01:48:33pm

When I heard about TF2's unlockable weapons I avoided the game. I hate the idea that I might be more skilled than some other player, but he kills me because he has a weapon I don't have access to.

But since then I've become a huge fan of the game. Valve does an awesome job of balancing the new weapons so they give you an advantage in one way, but a disadvantage in another. For example the pyro can get the backburner that is more deadly if you are hit from behind, but I hardly every use it becuase I've learned to use the blowback of the regular flamethrower.

If you've played for a while the new weapons allow you to try new tactics, keeping the game fresh and exciting. If you are new, just ignore the new weapons, you don't need them, learn to play with the old ones and move on when you are ready.

Spy Gains Revolver/Cannon Combo in Latest TF2 Update

Posted 05/20/2009 at 01:06:06pm

I'm not the greatest spy, but I've come to enjoy it. The trick is to get behind the enemies main lines. This is actually pretty hard, I can usually only make it 1 or 4 times. Once behind the lines remember the weapons of fallen players and metal will recharge your cloak.

Once behind enemy lines start talking with your medics. Get them to warn you before they uber charge. If you can start sapping 1/2 a second before they uber you can take out any engineer nest.

As to back stabbing, WTF! I've been "back stabbed" so many times in the face I lose count, yet when I try and back stab most of the time I "miss" and end up getting cut to pieces by some angry sniper. Anybody figured out what the games ruels are on this? I mean the real rules the game is using, not the stated rules that don't seem to be 100% accurate.

Cybersquatting Problem Worse than Ever in 2008

Posted 03/19/2009 at 12:13:10pm

I run 4 very simple website, and even I have had problems with this. I moved my websites from one hosting company to another one. One of the domain names was about to expire so I was going to let it expire than just reregister it with the new company. It was picked literally with an hour of expiring by some cyber squatter. Now it just sits there parked with Google ads. I was able to get the .net version of the name, but I wasted hours of my time changing all my text and Google keywords. Not to mention looking like an ass to my customer.

I hate to see big corporations use cyber squatting laws to squish the little guy, but something has to be done. These cyber squatters are just feeding off other peoples hard work, they are not adding any value to society.

Got an old computer just sitting around? Go to this page:
http://reilly.homeip.net/folding/cd.html

Answer the questions (defaults are ok if you don't know the answer), then hit "Download ISO". The page builds you a "custom" ISO with the Stanford Folding program. Remember team 11108 FTW!

Burn the ISO to a CD, throw it in and you're helping to cure cancer.

The program even has a small web server so you can check from a computer on the same network to make sure the system is up and running.  I've got it running on an old Dell sitting under my desk at work, no keyboard or monitor attached.
