ATI Radeon HD 5970: The Undisputed Performance Champ

Posted 11/18/2009 at 06:57:29am

If you use two cards at the same time it does not matter that both slots are x16, they will both be forced to perform at 8x specs. If you did three two would perform at x4 spec and one would perform at x8 spec (or was it all perform at x4 spec?). This is why you see a performance decrease, or just not as great an increase, in some games when using the same card twice.

Ever have to wait for service? Be it a resteraunt, or a check out line, or whatever.

Are you telling me that you would not get annoyed past the first 30 seconds when your inches from leaving and have your credit card in hand that your pretty much told "hold on, I will help you when I am done dancing, and this is more important than servicing you even though your transaction will take me all of 20 seconds at the most."

It's un professional, and makes people not want to shop with you again. In a normal place you expect to wait when an employee is helping someone else. Imagine if they did this at the dmv!

Dance Video Proves Microsoft Stores Officially Uncool

How they can make any money is beyond me. I believe I noticed over 15 employees, all "working" at the same time for 4 plus minutes. So some of them had to be in the middle of the a sale and pretty much told thier customer/client "hold on" and the reason was to dance. So if the customer gets angry and want's to complain, they have to wait the 4 minutes to get a hold of a damn manager who is freaking dancing!?

I really don't understand how they are planning on staying in business. The place looks like it had as many employees on the clock as it had customers (if not more employees) to sell products that give almost no margin at all.

I don't know what's worse, trying to get help from morons who do not know where thier product is at walmart, let alone information on it, or actually seeing people who CAN help, but rather fragging dance! To top it all off they are forced/payed to disservice me!? Way to compete with walmart in the poor customker service sector!

I am having a hard time believeing microsoft wants to make money anymore. Everyday I hear a report that thier earnings are down, they are putting out commercials that are making them no money, because they make no sense, or they just can't dent the damned apple market (which is what they are trying to do). I think they are trying to say they don't need to make any more money, or that they have way too damn much of it.

I'd say sell stock in microsoft now if it was not for the fact that any time they sneeze, or fart, they go up a point on speculation alone.....

Microsoft just embarassed themselves and everyonewho attempts to defend windows in a conversation. "yeah, well the apple geniuses at least snob you and let you know where product is, the microsoft employees just riverdance in place and don't even ask you to wait, you just do...... awe struck in disbelief"

uh no, you get a $100 walmart giftcard with the purchase of a $200 xbox arcade. Theoretically if you could return the system and buy it again and pay with the giftcard you just got, the system would cost $100 before tax

AMD to Phase Out Several Phenom II X4 CPUs, Readies Six-Core Chip

Posted 11/02/2009 at 02:47:02pm

I would love to see a 6 core chip by amd, but the core i series is still showing 8 cores (physically 4) and kicking butt. 6 cores is good, and a purist will perfer these cores to 4 that simulate 8.

However with timing and the supposed announcement that amd is working on 32nm processors with a expected release of 2011, whats the difference of 6 months? Phenom II's life span is, what, 9 months? I root for AMD so intel does not become a monopoly and just start holding back tech for profit, but I am feeling a bit guilty here. If the Phenom II did not have near the same benchmarks with DDR3 I think I would not feel so bad. Seeing that makes me feel like I bought a brand new car with a 3 speed maximum transmission lol.

If I had to choose right now what to build, the $100 difference between a core i5 and phenomII would not make me willing to lose the near 40% benchmark difference.

At least the graphics card's are kicking butt :/.

Release Notes: I Am Not, Nor Have I Ever Been, a Fanboy

Will Smith is the best EIC MaximumPC has had IMHO.

I think your talking about the articles about busted iphones, build an hackintosh, and other various articles about apple products in some way. Your missing the fact that all the articles are about proiducts used on the PC hardware. The building a hackintosh article is just to let users know what they can do, not saying they should, with PC hardware. This article is just as genuine as an article on loading linux on a PS3, building a media center pc, duel booting your os, or anything other walkthrough to give pc users who want to tinker, a guide to tinker.

Show these numerous articles that are just about mac's only.

I also take offense that you think the PC platform can not be trendy in anyway. Customizing your PC, and the gadgets you use, is like decorating your home or car. Geek cred is about how many hacks/customizations you have utilized, or do utilize. How is that different from a trendy show like 'cribs' or 'pimp my ride', or 'orange county chopper'?

Sorry it's not only about PC hardware, and sometimes about pc related accessories?.....which is just about everything these days. I bet you think MaximumPC should not do an article on TV's with web browsing built in!

I'd hate the magazine if it was only articles about new hardware for PC building. Maybe you would like it to be that darned plain jane, but I think the majority of the subscribers like the tech articles more.

I wonder if you consider it a waste of resources when they built the multitouch PC? Shame on them for doing some woddwork to build the darned thing, they should have bought a case and built it with that lol. Or better yet, become planPC and showed off thier newely bought hp touchsmart! lol

It says under the scores "To measure home server transfer speeds, we copy a 695MB folder and a 263MB video file from a desktop machine"

the 695mb would be a folder filled with 'small files', but it is larger and will take longer to transfer. The single 263mb is the large file. That's why the 'large' file takes less time to transfer, it's physically smaller. The only reason the benchmarks do both is because some devices bog down horribly under thousands of files done at once, but speed demon through one massive file (in comparison of rate to size ratio).

Play Armchair Electrician with Asus' Voltage-Tweakable EAH5800 Series Graphics Cards

Posted 10/02/2009 at 12:24:08pm

The numbers must be off, or the naming scheme for ati graphics is in reversing order now. The 5850 boasts better stats in that statment by far even without the overclock at 4000 mhz mem and 4800 gpu.

The 4000 mhz is a typo from what gddr5 can produce. The base clock on 5850 is 1000 mhz, and 1200 mhz on the 5870. This does not make sense with how they came up with the 725 mhz in the statement above for the 5870 mem speed.

I think someone was drunk when putting in these numbers in teh statement from asus, or, the spec charts on that page are all completely wrong. But not one number matches up in a way that is consistant and can be correlated to the others :/.
