Has Windows 7 Already Lost to Mac OS X?
Posted 11/02/2009 at 02:37:36pm
It's all hype to sell more boxes. I'm a video editor, graphic and web designer. I tried to switch to mac. Honestly. I gave up because I had to run two computers, one mac and one PC. The fact is, most of the editors I know who use mac are in the same boat, OR, they are dual booting between Windows and OS X. What's the point? I'm not any better of an editor or designer because I have a MAC. Tools are tools, it's all about the person's ability to use the tools at hand.
I guess what I am trying to say here, if they gain a small amount of market share with people who don't really know what they are buying, well then so be it. But what I know is, I only need one computer in operation to run my business and with the upgrade to a 64 bit Windows 7 I have been very content for the past week. I can see the performance improvements brought on by not only a 64 bit OS with apps that take advantage of that, but also in the core itself. The system runs, runs well. Can't ever imagine going back and trying to do it again on a Mac with limited software.

Baseshield looked like the nicest of the bunch but it doesn't support 64 bit. Something the writer of an article for a "Power Users" magazine should have made note of.
Study Finds Windows 7 isn't Faster to Boot than Vista
Posted 10/08/2009 at 09:24:15am
I have noticed that on th ebeta laptop I have been running for months, it takes around 3 minutes to get to a useable state. It didn't start out that way. The sad thing is we have added no extraneous programs etc. The configuration is the exact same. All we have done with it is use to surf the net at bedtime. Nothing more.
While a big part of me wants to upgrade, XP and my dev apps all work fine as of now and for the foreseeable future. If it isn't broke, dont fix it.
StarCraft II Delayed into 2010

I dont think it really matters. Alot of folks aren't buying because they took out LAN action. Besides, C&C4 is a better prospect to begin with. More power to them but I haven't bought a Blizzard product since the original Starcraft and I don't plan on buying anymore.
Blizzard Thinks Players Don’t Want LAN in StarCraft 2 – 57,000 People Beg to Differ

Not everyone has a quality internet connection. We host 16 player LAN's in my garage in the boonies. The Internet connection sucks and wont handle 16 people pounding it out to battle.net... on the other hand, we get by beautifully on any local lan game. Alot of us in my aging group (Im 41) were looking forward to Starcraft II ... Not anymore. Other games and publishers wil get our money this year. Not Blizzard.
Upset MacBook Air Owner Makes Subtle, Nuanced Pro-PC Argument

The fact is, I have an IBM A30 Laptop that is now 7 years old and still running perfectly. No broken hinges, etc. It has outlasted ALL of my Apple Laptops and taken far more abuse.
While I love the Mac OS, I have nothing but contempt for Apple hardware.
Psion Files $1.2 Billion Countersuit Against Intel in Netbook Case

Psion owns the trademark, free and clear. Intel must license said use of trademark. Bottom line. That's the law as it is written.
Windows 7 Offers Six Ways to Play
Posted 02/04/2009 at 05:42:19pm
This is exactly why I will not move beyond Windows XP. If there comes a day I can't use Xp anymore, then I suppose I'll have to finally go 100% Linux or MAC. XP is my last Microsoft Operating system until Microsoft starts using sensible businese practices.
Build the Ultimate USB Thumb Drive Toolbox
Posted 02/01/2009 at 10:35:01pm
To easily make Knoppix bootable on any thumb drive.. download fixkp2.exe. Run and it will create a "USB-Knoppix" folder on your thumb drive.
Put the Knoppix ISO directly into the USB-Knoppix folder and then run fixkp2.bat from inside the same folder. The batch file will take care of everything that needs to be done. just follow the directions. When done, reboot your system selecting the thumb drive to boot from.
Comcast Rolls Out Throttling System Across All Markets
Posted 01/06/2009 at 04:44:42pm
I really think Comcast needs to rre-examine its business plan and style of service. I got my first cable internet connection in April of 1999. In these past 10 years, the 4 years I had to endure Comcast on the east coast was the worse experience of my life regarding my internet connection.
I paid an extra 10 bucks a month for the premium connection and for my money I received at least 1-2 outages per month lasting longer than 2 hours.
At least one outage every 3 months lasting longer than 8 hours.
In addition, they have been doing this bandwidth throttling for much longer than has been discussed. It's just that the mainstream consumer knew nothing of it.
Network capacity on the backbone has increased 1000 fold in these past ten years and there isn't any reason Comcast needs to do this other than they do not wish to fork out capital to upgrade their networks and equipment.
You need to remember, Comcast is made up of many different cable systems that they have acquired over the years. Adelphia, Insight and many others. It's cheaper to limit the customer than it is to do the right thing and provide quality service and a quality product.
