Release Notes: What Exactly Is a Personal Computer?
Posted 11/20/2009 at 12:00:48am
If it has a processor, computes, and doesn't take up a whole room, it's a PC. Heck, by classificiation of what a computer is, it doesn't have to have a processor. It can have a series of transistors that compute 1s and 0s.
That means, even Macs are PCs. Video game systems are PCs. Your Casio calculator watch is a PC. Your mobile is a PC. It's kind of like all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares. There are just different names and classifications of PCs, but they are all PCs.
PC stands for Personal Computer. Unfortunately "personal definition" means nothing. There is only the definition.

8 Things You Need to Know about Chrome OS

I'm not really liking how if everything is synced with the "cloud" (Some server somewhere that holds your crap.) And anyone who can hack my credentials can have access to my personal stuff. I prefer to have a robust OS, or OSes, and keep my stuff on physical media in my own home. This is just nuts.
I can see a Chrome add-in to say Explorer or another file browser where you can sync certain things to your Google account, but a whole OS dedicated to putting you on the Web if you like it or not. I'm not sure about that.

Is it just me, or is Apple's tactics more restrictive than MSFT could ever think of being. Seems MSFT doesn't really care what device their products go on as long as you paid for your copy.

I'm currently not at "my" pc, but I know that you can use Handbrake for avi, mp4, xvid, and divx if I remember correctly. I'll make a correction when I can.
Media Coder is nice, but for some reason, for me, Handbrake just works better.

Yep, our hard earned tax dollars at work, so they can do something that will promote lawsuits. Thus, spending more of our tax dollars in legal fees. Wow, this is S-M-R-T smart. I do hope whoever thought this one up gets sacked without retirement.

If you live outside the USA you can use Ubuntu. Put in the Medibuntu repositories, load libdvdcss, load VLC, and rip any DVD as an ISO to your hard drive with Brasero Disc copier. (Do all updates and edit your menu so that Disc Copier is in your System Tools menu. Regular Brasero has issues copying disks to ISOs.) Now, you can just open the ISO with VLC and play your movies just like a regular DVD.
Also, if you have Handbrake installed (via Deb file or Google "Handbrake Ubuntu Repository" to add it to your repository list) you can now transcode the ISO into a smaller multimedia package, and you can do things like watch Lord of the Rings without having to change discs, by adding the files in the order you wish to watch them in the VLC playlist.

Great article. However, I do wish these would work just like Synaptic. Oh well. Maybe your article will get a fire burning under somebody and get things rolling.

You're exactly right. That's why we let the pilot fly the plane.

Google Announces Outlook-Gmail App Sync For The Enterprise

What about Thunderbird's Google Provider and Zindus extensions? I find both of these as a must have for multibooting and having several different computers. Nice to see something for Outlook, but for a home user I do believe OpenSource alternatives are the way to go due to smaller sizes, less resource usage, and customization of applications vis extensions.
Heck, even for large businesses I believe OpenSource is still a better way to go.
