Microsoft: Vista SP2 is Done!
Posted 04/30/2009 at 06:35:25pm
I have Vista SP2 RTM now installed. It appears to be working fine so now it comes down to vlite being able to produce a slipstreamed version from my original media. I already have a slipstreamed SP1 dvd and I know that SP2 requires SP1 as a prerequisite to install. Hopefully vLite will be able to use as a base the install media I created for SP1 and just give me an updated build for installation! The one issue I was hoping to find a listing somewhere is what this Service Pack contains. Information such as a bug fix catagory listing such as was available for SP1 and also the numbers for defect fixes that indicate how many are only available through the installation of SP2? Vista just got a bad rap to begin with and I'm sure SP2 will be the "magic" for it - XP was also extremely unpopular for its initial adoption as well. Windows 7 and Vista as well are based on sharing of fundamental systems: the driver model for example is unchanged and this allows for using Vista drivers in Windows 7 and perhaps even from Windows 7 to Vista. This commonality makes things easier for manufacturers. There won't be a big-bump moving from Vista to 7 compared to moving from XP to Vista driver model changes. Even sticking with Vista once 7 is available ins't a bad thing because 7 sharing this core functionality makes things work similarly which means more compatibility.
The Hunt For Vista Drivers

Here is an essential resource for nVidia laptop owners:
http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/
On a gaming support forum I help out in we send people here all the time. Basically nVidia's drivers use whats called a Unified Driver Model. Which means that the same driver will work on all of nVidia's hardware. What keeps the driver from working on laptops is that the installer cannot correctly identify the laptop parts. Laptop Video 2 Go provides whats called modified .inf files which tells the installer how to identify the part. You absolutely must read and follow the instructions in their Quickstart Guide as it tells you how to get the installer to use the modified .inf file. The best thing about Laptop Video 2 Go is that you end up using the latest ForceWare drivers that are available, not some manufacturer provided piece of junk thats eight months out of date. So all your games work better and some that wouldn't work at all with the manufacturer drivers work like a charm.
