How-To: Install Windows 7 the Right Way

Posted 10/22/2009 at 11:35:09pm

With every MS OS in the past, I've waited until the SP1 to take the plunge. Until now that is and I'm already regretting it. I was running Vista Ultimate 64 bit and it was working terrific. Got flamed by all the RC users about how miserable Vista was though and how I had to try 7 cause it was oh sooooo awesome. Now I've got a system that's running dog slow on everything from file transfers to opening internet pages. I even bit the bullet and did a completely clean install so there is no excuse for it running lousy. I spent $120.00 and all day on this??!! Should have left well enough alone and waited for SP1 like I was originally going to. *sigh*

Sentiment so far? 7 blows! Should have stuck with Vista since it was done with it's growing pains and they'd fixed it.

Mass Effect 2 Gets Late January Release Date

It's been a lackluster year so far for gaming and I for one can't wait for the next few months. Dragon Age Origins, Mass Effect 2, Left for Dead 2, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 and more. There are a LOT of good games coming out. Why does it seem to always be feast or famine in gaming? Oh well, I'm not going to complain. I'm just going to be glad to be a gamer right now and beef up my carpal tunnel coverage! ;)

P.S. Apparently there was some discussion about it running on Win 64 bit? Played the first one through 4 times on Vista 64bit with nary a hitch.

Should You Avoid Windows 7?

Posted 08/21/2009 at 02:26:49pm

Honestly I don't know why Vista is still carrying the train wreck reputation. Granted when it was first released, it was a mess, with more blue screens than Win ME and more swearing from me than with Win ME, but from my perspective, they've fixed it. I've been running Vista 64bit since May of 2007 and most of the problems had been resolved by the time SP1 was released, and any of my remaining complaints were resolved with SP1 and driver updates from my hardware vendors. I have not had a windows crash in well over a year and the OS has been rock stable for me. Sleep mode actually works like it's supposed to with no wake up glitches like previous MS OS's, and that's a first! The only thing left that annoyed me was UAC, and that was easily resolved by using a good internet security suite and turning UAC off. I realize that is not ideal, but is it worth spending 200 bucks just so I can enable a less annoying UAC? I'm not thinking so. If Vista was still the "train wreck" it initially was and really as bad as the Win 7 proponents push it as being, maybe. Since the OS is rock solid for me and works great, I'm finding it hard to justify the upgrade expense.

The Pirate Bay Verdict: Guilty with Jail Time and 3.6M Fines!

Posted 04/17/2009 at 08:22:37pm

Anyone who is a PC gamer with any level of common sense, has to see how piracy is destroying our hobby. Game production companies are abandoning producing PC games wholesale, because piracy is so rampant for PC games. They are a business and piracy sure doesn't pay the bills or put food on the tables of the employees. With piracy of PC games rampant, they are going to go where they can make money for their effort, ie console games.

I for one applaud the descision and hope the trend continues. Piracy is theft. Plain and simple and theives piss me off. Get a job and pay for what you own like the rest of us. Anyone who doesn't want to pay for something, doesn't need to have it. You get paid for the work you do and software manufacturers & employees deserve the same.

Besides the moral issues involved though, I don't want to watch my hobby fade into history because some people are too cheap to pay for a game. Since many people obviously don't have the morality to make the right choice on their own, maybe decisions like this will "assist" them in making the right choice and maybe our passion will be saved as a result.

P.S. For those bitching about copy protection, activation and securom, if it wasn't for piracy, those things wouldn't need to exist!

I'm guessing that along with that boredom came some, shall we call it lack of enthusiasm in her job performance? I'm sorry to have to agree with "the man", but if somebody hates their job, they probably aren't delivering what they are getting paid for and it just makes sense to hire someone that actually enjoys their job and performs better at it.

Beware of Mail-in-Rebates (Seriously this Time)

Posted 11/14/2008 at 12:31:29pm

Anything that requires that you jump through 17 hoops, do the hokey pokey and fill out 11 forms in triplicate to get your own money, should be avoided like the plague. I detest rebates and will always take the product that has a genuine low price, over a moderately lower rebate price on another product. I am 1 for 3 on rebates, with one being payed out, one being declined because I sent a copy of the receipt instead of the original (I had to keep the original for warranty per the product warranty) and the last inexplicably not being paid for any reason, and Newegg offering me $30.00 of my next purchase instead, which was never honored because they lost record of the offer. My point? Avoid rebates like the scam they are!

ATI Catalyst 8.9 Drivers Releases Into the Wild

Posted 09/18/2008 at 06:47:55pm

I am running a Viewsonic LCD monitor with DVI connection and it works fine with my MSI OC Radeon 4870. I would guess there is something wrong with your monitors DVI connection or your individual cards DVI port if your DVI is not working. It's definitely not a driver issue.

What is a driver issue I wish they would have addressed is the problem running Battlestations Midway. the atikmdag driver does not get along with BSM and crashes the game 2 seconds after gameplay launch, with a display driver not responding error. This does seem to be pretty wide spread based on the posts online and it doesn't appear anyone with a 4800 series card is able to play BSM currently.

ReviewsCoop on
Gears of War

Posted 01/03/2008 at 11:15:57am

MPC dinged the coop for no split screen but they forgot to mention the brilliant aspects of the coop. You can actually play coop over the internet for starters, unlike just about any other game out there and that is terrific on it's own. I wish many more games would do that, as sometimes dealing with the online rif raf in multiplayer games becomes very tiring. Hooking up with a good friend that doesn't annoy the hell out of you and sharing the single player campaign can be a hell of a lot more fun and less annoying, and because you have your entire screen to yourself instead of losing half the real estate to your coop partner, but can still see him and talk to him, it makes for a much more immersive and enjoyable experience. Take notice game developers! GOW is on to something with their Coop and you should follow suit!
