Nvidia Warranty Costs Much Higher Than Expected
Posted 08/09/2009 at 02:22:05pm
This problem affects all hp laptops that are out on the market (except the latest version maybe).
http://hplies.com
HP was given lots of money by nvidia to fix this problem, but hp pocketed the cash and claims models dv9500+ are not affected by the recalls. My hp dv9500 laptop had my life on it, and its display died suddenly and right in front of me.
If you have an hp laptop, backup your data and image the drive ASAP. As soon as your wireless lan card dies on the laptop, know that the end is near.
Nvidia Warranty Costs Much Higher Than Expected
Posted 08/08/2009 at 04:43:50pm
The only reason that the warranty costs were lower than they expected is because they did not cover all the models that were affected by this defect.
My laptop, an hp dv9500 series notebook, crapped out after 23 months of use, because the nvidia 8600m gs in it died. HP did not cover the costs of repair, and many are having this issue.
Shame on you nvidia for screwing your customers.
Windows 7 Upgrade Editions Will Require an Activated Copy for Verification Each Time its Installed
Posted 07/19/2009 at 09:44:34pm
I was pissed off when I heard about this, but here's a way to avoid the pain of reinstalling 2 OS's after each reinstall:
1. Windows 7 RC 1 qualifies as an upgrade path. So clean install the windows 7 upgrade disc and activate it.
2. Get your hands on a copy of Acronis True Image, or another imaging program.
3. Image the drive. Save the image to a second partition and a couple of DVDs.
Now, every time you want to reinstall windows, reimage the drive from your partition or DVDs. In 5 minutes you'll be back up and running.
That's it.
Toshiba Releases Dynabook SS-RX2 with 512GB SSD
Posted 05/14/2009 at 07:46:00pm
It's great how SSDs have progressed in the past couple of years. I remember seeing the first 32GB SSD for a $1200 option for dell xps notebooks, now it's up to 512GB!! In addition to the massive capacity, the theoretical speeds are incredible, especially the 180MB/s write speed.
As with all new technology, it will make a sizable dent to your wallet, but wait a few months, and the price for this laptop and SSD will be extremely affordable,
I believe that the 1TB+ SSDs will exist sooner than you think.
Rushing to Get Windows 7 RC? Redmond Says "Relax"
Posted 05/06/2009 at 07:35:57pm
I downloaded and installed the Windows 7 RC today and I backed up my data manually since I don't trust the one built into windows. I did a clean install over the windows 7 beta OS i had before. It was easy to restore from my manual backup and all was smooth.
Drivers were great even for my cheap and pretty low end WLAN card. I get a 5.3 WEI rating and it's very smoothly performing. Office 2003 installed without a hitch and also runs flawlessly.
I look forward to installing Call of Duty World at War on my Windows 7 Install.
100th No BS Podcast Spectacular: Nathan's New PC (The Apologies in Advance Edition)
Posted 04/11/2009 at 02:35:20pm
I waited all month for this supposedly awesome episode and the end result was nothing but rubbish. I am a strong fan of Maximum PC and I recommend it to everyone, but this episode was BS. It was more like "Maximum PC ALL BS Podcast".
Instead of being a nice long episode, it was a POS with a length of 21 minutes and a couple of silly songs.
Get your act together. This is not the 100th episode we were all hoping for. I give it a -2/5 rating.

AVG Update Inadvertently Cripples Windows XP
Posted 11/12/2008 at 03:45:17pm
My friend called me today saying that his computer is giving him a BSoD. I asked him when did it happen, and he said "after running my virus software", which was AVG 8!! I decided to come here first, and behold, this article was here. I restored his system for him though, cause his lucky a** backed up his data to acronis true image yesterday.

Pre-Orders for Core i7 Platform Has Early Adopters Digging Deep into the Wallet
Posted 10/09/2008 at 08:11:13pm
If you are an early adopter with lots of money to spare during tough economic times, this is just for you. Otherwise, don't bother. I am damn sure that within one month of the core i7 official launch, prices will be way lower, and more mobo options will be available. If you wait longer, more issues may be kinked out by the time you buy it. Now, you could get a Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83ghz cpu w/ 12MB cache for $300, and you could get a gigabyte ga-ep45-ds3l motherboard for only a hundred dollars!! This seems to make more since and is a better bang for the buck than those core i7's.
