Microsoft Plans to Inundate New PCs with Ads-ridden Office 2010 Starter Edition
Posted 10/09/2009 at 08:57:55am
<Sigh>
It was only a matter of time before somebody chimed in with their uneducated, obtuse opinion about how OpenOffice.org stacks up. I'm just surprised that you didn't provide any argument as to "Why OpenOffice.org is better than Office!" or something.
Sure, you can go ahead and replace Office with OpenOffice *if you don't actually use them*. If you're a kid in school that only needs to type up and print out your essays, read the occasional MS Word or Excel file easily, or just have the "peace of mind" that you can open Office files - then yes, OpenOffice is great. Personally, I liked their early adoption of PDF creation from inside the program and the fact that they maintain it free.
...But if you're in a professional environment where quality matters, believe me when I say that you can't trust anything but Office to display your files properly and get them distributed to corporate executives without embarrassment. ...Not to mention the sheer multitude of features that OpenOffice is missing from Office.
There's a *reason* you pay for one of them.

Palm Pre Drops to $79.99 at Wal-Mart
Posted 09/26/2009 at 06:56:38pm
Personally, I love this phone and I want one pretty bad. What's holding me back is the fact that the entire playing field is going to be changed pretty soon...
The HTC Hero is coming out in a few weeks, and WinMo 6.5 stuff will be here even sooner than that. Then we have the Pixi, which I won't get just cuz the name is stupid, and Motorola and everybody else getting in on the Android scene before Christmas this year.
How much more is this phone going to drop before the end of the year to still compete with other phones out there? It'll probably be the FREE option to be honest...
Palm is dropping the prices on this thing like crazy right now because they're trying to get rid of inventory. They expected much more to sell, and now Verizon has even scrapped their plans to offer this phone because it didn't turn out to be the blockbuster that it was expected to be.

No offense, but how does that comment apply to this article? This isn't a "big electronic"... And better yet, this article is about how INexpensive Walmart is offering this new technology.

Microsoft Gets "Creative" with Anti-linux Training Materials
Posted 09/09/2009 at 11:16:24am
What wouldn't make sense about that? Wanting to play good games on your computer? ...Or maybe wanting to play games that are less than 5 years old on your computer?
I think it makes perfect sense to want to play good, newer games in Linux.

Everyone Wants a Kindle – But Only for $50
Posted 09/06/2009 at 11:40:22pm
I agree with a few of the posts below mine: I would love to have one if it were under $100 and the books cost around $5.
I don't care too much about sharing my books around, and I don't really even care if they're DRM'ed. But the mere though that the creator of the device could just delete all my crap just cuz they want to is what keeps me away. That's insanity. Amazon really screwed the pooch on that one - for the entire product line.

Noctua NH-U12P
Posted 09/04/2009 at 02:18:01pm
I must say, I'm very impressed with Noctua's fans. I put an NF-B9 as a replacement into my CPU cooler and it's amazingly quiet at full speed. A review of the NF-B9 that I read somewhere stated that the guy's hard drive is now his loudest component - and, quite frankly, he's absolutely right... The max RPM is a lot lower than my old fan, but somehow this thing still flows enough air to keep the CPU at the same temp as my old fan - but while being completely silent.

Mozilla Will Take Any Means Necessary to Make Sure You're Using Firefox 3.5

I wonder as well... At first, there was the dropped .NET support, but now they've remedied that and I see no reason why not to upgrade... ?

Specs and Shots Released of Dell's Smartphone

Naw - I mean just below the lens... As I look at it now (and pix on other sites) it looks like it may just be due to the pictures being so crappy that we're not seeing the difference in the little shiny silver piece under the camera lens and the white background...

Microsoft Explains Why They Can't Pull The Plug on IE 6

Quote: "Microsoft is committed to keeping support... We keep our commitments"... I guess much like Vista Ultimate Extras, eliminating most of the features in Vista that everybody was looking forward to, and their commitment to delivering software that doesn't suck...
