Verizon to AT&T: "The Truth Hurts"
Posted 11/17/2009 at 08:31:33am
It's nearly as entertaining as the commercials.
"The truth hurts." Indeed it does...the court's decision will probably be less entertaining, but a good read nonetheless.
AT&T Adds Two Windows 7 Starter Netbooks to Subsidized Lineup

AT&T Refutes Verizon's Network Coverage Attacks
Posted 11/11/2009 at 10:37:01am
OK, let's try this - add a light color to the AT&T map showing the 2.5G coverage area, and in nice, big, bold lettering, say something like "LIGHTER COLORED AREA = SLOWER THAN 3G". Wonder how quickly they'd bitch about that? Just like the current ads, it would be accurate...stating and showing nothing more than what Verizon says it does.
I still fail to see how any reasonably intelligent person can draw the conclusion there's no coverage outside of the blue areas, when it's in nice, readable letters below the map that it shows "AT&T 3G Coverage Area".
Anybody got some cheese to give AT&T? It'll go great with their whine.

You're kidding, right? Right?
Wait...you're serious.
No. Effin'. Way.
Study: HDDs Headed for the Bargain Bin, Not Obsolescence

HDDs may not be headed for obsolescence, but those FDDs in the picture certainly are.
Wal-Mart Takes on the Geek Squad
Posted 10/26/2009 at 09:20:32am
They probably received the lowest possible price from N.E.W., and if that company is anything like the other common break/fix field service providers, the techs will be:
1) Getting paid by the job
2) Using their own vehicles
3) Getting screwed over on both the actual cost of the work and the mileage reimbursement
Now, if N.E.W. has actual company vehicles and fleet fuel cards, it might work out better...but Geek Squad has their own vehicles, and most of the techs I've met from them could barely walk and chew gum at the same time.
Oh, well - Geek Squad has always given me some of my best customers as a result of their botched work and ridiculous prices, and if Walmart wants to help me out as well, it's fine with me.
50 Kick-Ass Websites You Need to Know About

I've been using Weather Underground for a long time now, and the ability to select advanced radar types alone is reason enough it beats Weather.com in my book. (Of course, WU doesn't have Heather Tesch, so it's kind of even, I guess. :) )
More than once, I've used WU to monitor approaching storms...the interactive radar display gives you six frames of playback (more if you pay), which is more than adequate to figure out where the serious weather is headed.

Freeware Files: Five New Tools for Your Virtual Toolbox!
Posted 10/05/2009 at 07:29:52am
Free? Check. Polished? Uh-huh. Runs practically every OS thrown at it? Yep. Free? You betcha.
VBox runs Windows 7 RC build 7100 flawlessly, and it actually runs faster than the Vista Ultimate on physical hardware that's running VBox! I currently have VMs of Win 7 RC, XP Pro, 2000 Pro, Ubuntu 9, gOS 3, and OpenSolaris; all run without problems.
X2brute, what install disk are you talking about? You only need to mount the .ISO file of the OS you want to install; after it's installed, unmount it and mount the normal CD/DVD drive. My apologies if I'm misunderstanding your comment.

Everyone Stay Calm, Firefox is Not Adopting the Microsoft Ribbon
Posted 09/30/2009 at 09:04:30pm
...someone comes up with an add-on for that? (I'd say "app for that", but I don't want Apple fanboys or lawyers trying to flog me with wet noodles.) Let me get this straight...first, Mozilla used the word "chrome" to define the URL of files describing UI elements in their browser. Next, Google uses it as the name of their entire browser, and now Mozilla wants to make Firefox look like that browser. Next thing you know, we'll be offered something like WebSlicedChromeWidgets with SidebarAcceleratorAddOns and SpeedDialCoverFlowExtensions. O-M-G-W-T-F-B-B-Q.
