Posted 11/02/2009 at 08:27:58am
you have got to be kidding me! I have been running 7 since jan and even then was a helluva better than vista and I felt even xp. There is no reason not to upgrade this time around.
How To: Use Your Windows 7 Upgrade Disk On a Fresh PC

Why are you harping on the upgrade having to have a valid OS? Almost everyone here does. But most like me do not want any garbage from the old install on the new install. Clean install is still the best way.
Have a little consideration dude!

there was some issues with the networking that was able to be fixed by using a vista tweak of all things. Here is the link and text: http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showthread.php?t=8870. Doubled my throughput to my WHS
To open the Command Prompt Window:
Click start, Click All Programs, scroll to Accessories and Click to open Accessories.
Find the Command Prompt and right click it, and left click "Run as Administrator"
As small window will open, click Continue, and a black window will open. The Command Prompt Window.
Into the Black Window, enter:
netsh int tcp show global Return
This will display a list similar to the one below; this is how they should look if all is correct. You need to check your list against this and note which items are not correct.
TCP Global Parameters
----------------------------------------------
Receive-Side Scaling State………….: enabled
Chimney Offload State…………………: enabled
Receive Window Auto-Tuning Level….: normal
Add-On Congestion Control Provider..: ctcp
ECN Capability………………………………: enabled
RFC 1323 Timestamps………………….: disabled
Is Explicit Congestion Notification enable on your system
Next you need to run a test to see if your system supports ECN (Explicit Congestion Notification) some system support it other do not. To run the test go to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/usi...d/default.mspx and follow the instructions. You are looking for the result of the ECN test that is under "Traffic Congestion Test". If it is supported you can enable it.
Now to tweak your Vista.
Receive-Side Scaling State needs to be enabled.
The command is:
netsh int tcp set global rss=enabled Return
Chimney Offload State needs to be enabled
The command is:
netsh int tcp set global chimney=enabled Return
Receive Window Auto-Tuning Level needs to be normal
The command is:
netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=normal Return
Add-On Congestion Control Provider needs to be set to ctcp
This may not appear to be in your list. If you do not think the Congestion Control Provider is on yourlist enter the command and it will appear.
The command is:
netsh interface tcp set global congestionprovider=ctcp Return
You should only enable ECN Capability if the Microsoft test said it could be enabled on your system.
The command is:
netsh int tcp set global ecncapability=enabled Return
Now do another
netsh int tcp show global Return
Finally, check if has all taken. Your list should look like the one below.
TCP Global Parameters
----------------------------------------------
Receive-Side Scaling State………….: enabled
Chimney Offload State…………………: enabled
Receive Window Auto-Tuning Level….: normal
Add-On Congestion Control Provider..: ctcp
ECN Capability………………………………: enabled
RFC 1323 Timestamps………………….: disabled
What do You Think of Windows 7?
Posted 10/22/2009 at 04:01:32pm
I have been using windows 7 since Jan with build 7100... I was very happy then and i am very happy now... I ran Vista and still thought it sucked before that. Even in the early state, it was a big improvement on Vista. I am now runnint the x64 RTM code and again i love it. This is coming from a linux/unix guy. I have 3 upgrade copies showing up tomorrow.
I have 750GB of games installed... in fact i have a few games i could not get running under xp and vista that work under 7. I have none of the incompatibilites that people are saying.

wow... i have none of your problems... I have 750GB of games installed (300+ in Steam). Of course I am running the x64 version. There is no way this is Vista SP2 (there was already a Vista SP2). Fundamentally much more stable than the entire time i had Vista in both 32 and 64bit flavors. I was on sp1 then i got the built 7100 and never looked back. I use this pc for media center and gaming. Vista sucked but 7 is a home run. Blows XP out of the water.

Show how little you actually know...and you call yourself a linux person...
Win7 x64 is a true 64-bit os... like x64bit version of Ubuntu. The 32-bit ablility is using a virtual machine type call called WindowsOnWindows. This is the same way Ubuntu x64 runs 32bit programs. All you do is add the libraries.
Compiz works great until you want to run any games. Slow the system down a lot. Compiz still needs a lot of work.. (and yes i have used it. ) I had to turn it off my work pc because of it being unstable.
I would ask you to either do a little more research before stating off truths like you did above or better yet, quit trolling this site.
I use both linux and windows. I have very deep knowledge of both and more important, I have an open mind.
Freeware Files: Five New Tools for Your Virtual Toolbox!

Virutalbox is the only VM software that supports 3D. Opengl works and directx 8 and 9 are in beta. Comparing it to VirtualXP is not doing your homework. VirtualPC or VirtualXP honestly sucks for running anything othere than word.
I use virtualbox on Linux Mint and Windows 7 Ultimate x64. Works wonderfully. And yes I have ran Vmware since version.99 and have used VirtualPC also.I stopped using both when i started using Virtualbox. Havent missed them at all.
