Nvidia to Launch 40nm GPUs this September
Posted 07/08/2009 at 07:18:34pm
The old 8800gt has served me well, but this sounds like upgrade time to me. Hopefully Borderlands turns out well and Dragonage doesn't get delayed again.
Nvidia Releases OpenCL Driver, SDK
Posted 04/22/2009 at 05:46:08pm
It's my understanding that OpenCL is a lower level language that interfaces more directly with the GPU and CUDA is a bit higher up. The real issue is that parallelization of code is pretty tricky especaily with the complex memory allocation that has to happen on a smaller scale than with RAM on a CPU. You can't currently take existing code in C or Fortran or whatever that has been parallelized with MPI and compile it for CUDA, which really kills the appeal for 90% of people. At least in teh scientific community we are all waiting until there is a very solid foundation and standards before we try to port all of our code to a GPU.
MSI Claims 90% Better Cooling with SuperPipe Technology

i like msi. they seem to always put good aftermarket coolers on their cards while keeping their prices towards the lower end of the spectrum. that gets my money every time.
Nvidia Adds GeForce GTX 275 to Arsenal, Releases New Power Pack
Posted 04/02/2009 at 10:43:26am
I'm still waiting to upgrade my 8800gt for 1680x1050 res. That thing was such a good buy at the time that I think it's hurting sales a bit a year later since so many people have them and they are still working so well in new games at the most typical resolutions.
“Steamworks Makes DRM Obsolete,” Claims Valve
Posted 03/25/2009 at 07:49:29am
So is this just like a watermark so that you'd be in trouble if you put your copy online? If there is any need to communicate with a server to install the product then it's still DRM, it doesn't matter if they remove all install limits, they will eventually not have the servers and the consumer is boned. Need some further clarification on this.

Escape from City 17 is the Coolest Fan Film You'll Watch this Week
Posted 02/17/2009 at 10:09:37am
As a proof of concept this is really pretty amazing, but as a chapter 1 in a film it makes no sense. Did the characters even have names? I mean that was the worst acting I've seen in a long time. As a huge fan of HL I think that the effects and recreation of City 17 was spectacular for the money they were working with, but the main reason HL is so good is that it's the only video game I've ever played that made me care about the characters at all...
Doomed Online Campaign Urges Microsoft to Release Windows 7 Now
Posted 02/02/2009 at 08:28:45am
The real point of this is just to let Microsoft know that people want it as soon as it's ready and that it should be priority number 1, not that they should literally release it today.
