Windows XP gets Another Stay of Execution
Posted 12/22/2008 at 03:51:01pm
I've been playing with Ultimate for awhile, but don't do anything heavy with it. It plays my game and that's about it. Had some fun with several apps claiming Vista compatibility, then giving me problems if I don't run them as admin. Mostly a frustration. Do not like the way it tries to repair my network connection sometimes when the cable modem loses connectivity or the way it tries to create a new wireless connection on the laptop if it cannot use the existing one. Guess I need to get serious and learn where they hid everything. It was easier moving from 2000 to XP than from XP to Vista. Vista does seem to figure out wireless connections easier, but I don't do that all the time. One thing I do need to determine is why configuration settings do not seem to stick in Vista. It keeps reminding me that a sound driver file is not signed even though I log in as the admin and tell it that it should not be concerned. Also the firewall keeps turning off even though I tell it to stay on. Oh, I know - just turn off UAC and promote myself to Admin!

I like the concept, but wonder what will happen when popular sites get hit with a greater number than usual of visits. Also wonder how much local space keeping months of data will take up?
Linksys WRT600N Dual-Band Wi-Fi Router

This was my first WiFi experiment. Initally the install went smooth with my cable modem and even used the supplied program to get the other computers added with security. I was experimenting with Windows Vista Ultimate, which is supposedly compatible, but your mileage may vary. Looking back, should have been smart and just used XP Pro to load the Linksys Advisor program. I'm giving it a year, then considering dd-wrt, hopefully I won't lose the storage port.
One week after the install, the fun started happening. It lost connectivity to the internet. Resetting was a pain and then the GUI software decided that it didn't see the device anymore. This has happened multiple times over the months and I just unplug it and let it get another IP from the cable modem.
I did flash to the most recent firmware and did go through the web based interface to make sure the timezone and DHCP option were set correctly. Why it cannot consistently get a lease renewal is anyones guess, the wired router version I had before it never had a problem.
And everyone is right, this thing gets extremely hot. It doesn't help that I live in the south and it get hot here anyway. It's been better since I keep a fan blowing on it, but it still goofs occasionally and I have to reset.
Other than that, the 1GB links work fine with my PC and I've never had problems plugging in cat5 cables that I've made.

After reading the article about heat on the quad core home setup, I'm wondering how much heat the new procs will generate and what the recommended cooling solution will be. I guess I'll need to price a window unit for the computer room.

Haven't tried any other games, but DDO Stormreach installs and plays fine on recent hardware with Vista Ultimate with SP1.
