Proposed Bill Gives Obama the Power to Shut Down the Internet
Posted 04/15/2009 at 04:49:11pm
I've not read all the comments, but I noticed some of them mention the same sort of things that ham radio operators have been known for for years. If I'm not mistaken, ham radio operators got the word out of New Orleans after Katrina. Ham operators are also seen as the first line of communication should the bomb incapacitate our typical communication lines. To even suggest that the president be allowed to do something like this is beyond silly. In the event of national disaster, the interweb would be invaluable for sending comminication to places where lines have been cut or destroyed.
Besides, with it's redundant nature, the interweb wouldn't be shut down for long; Remember 9/11? Nary a pothole on the information superhighway. I think it's all a great deal of hype, to be honest, and I certainly hope that if such a situation were to arise, that the president, whether it be Mr. Obama or Rush Limbaugh, would have enough commn sense to NOT use that kind of power. It would be far more disastrous in my opinion to try and close down communications.

I don't know if this has been touched on or not in the comments, but from what I've seen in the past two months or so I've been playing with 7, it looks to me like malware may.. and I emphasize MAY be a thing of the past. At least the dangerous stuff which can actually harm your system and force a format and clean install. Seems everything outside the kernel is being run in a virtual setting, and the core of the OS is isolated from everything else. Ghot can go right ahead and stick with XP, I'm ok with that. But I like 7. I will be getting a full version (or two) once it becomes available. It boots quicker than Vista, and XP for that matter, seemingly because it loads the operating system first, then anything else gets loaded in the background while you're off to the interweb. I guess that could just be my perception, but that is how I see things happening. I still can't bring myself to intentionaly infect it, but I do have VirtualBox installed and just might give that a shot..

What about the folks who don't use anywhere near the 50, 100 or 250 gigs of data allowed? My Mom uses her computer to read a few emails, and check out a few comic strips online every day. She might use a gig per month, if it's a long month. That frees up a whole bunch of 1s and 0s for the rest of us, right? With America on the road to socialism in a handbasket, I would think that we ALL should be allowed the amount of data available, regardless of who uses it. If Mom only uses one gig, shouldn't I be allowed to use the other 249?
