Justin Long's a Liar, Apple Tells Mac Users to Install Antivirus Software

Posted 12/04/2008 at 12:35:33pm

great job guys - this story came out three days ago across the web. and apple has already pulled the page AND made statements that they've always supported adding anti-virus software to Macs (which they have). Are you guys actually doing anything? Or just poorly re-hashing old news articles.

 Please up your game.

 -Loyal reader.

PS. there hasn't been a single successful virus to affect macs to date. it was a precautionary memo as there were two ineffective attempts at wide-spead mac os X malware floating around the net. the precaution is probably related to macs increasing their market share (~9%) meanwhile your beloved microsoft declines.

MSFT still holds just shy of 90% of the market, and I own a Vista machine so attempts to label this poster as a mac-freak/hippy would be misplaced. But the spin MPC has put on articles boasting about the failsauce Windows 7 while trying to piss on Apple just decreases the validity of this publication.

Windows Growth Slows, are Netbooks to Blame?

Posted 11/10/2008 at 10:36:29am

Take the current trends to the long term - Linux is becoming more main-stream, which will aid current driver issues and make support for newer users easier to find, putting it in more direct competition with windows.

As Linux becomes more substitutable for windows, simple economics state that either Windows will have to offer benefits worth its premium or lower its price. Examining recent MS behavoir, it has done neither: Windows 7 promises less add-on features, substituting instead "we can get the basics right (or at least good-looking)" while simultaneously doubling the licensing fee for vista from XP, indicating that microsoft, in the long term, will be clutching at straws in the notebook market as its revenues fade. If microsoft seeks to be anything more than a business software company in the future they need to adjust their business model.

so, if I'm reading this correctly, (and I'd like to think that I am) the end result of this feature is really that there won't be device compatibility problems that there were in vista. Sorry, but sounds like "this is what vista was supposed to be" OS to me... not that that's even a bad thing. More about the fact that MS should just be straight up with its customers about vista instead of the meandering "eh it had issues but they're all fixed now. Kinda. Hey! Look at windows 7."
