OC Your Proc
Posted 08/21/2009 at 12:16:14am
Hi All,
I need a little help. I built my system in the fall and I am now ready to start overclocking. Lord Omega, your system looks the closest to mine. This is what I have...
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3R with upgraded heatsink. I forgot the exact model but it was rec from Tom's Hardware.
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit RC
Processor: Intel Quad 6600
Memory: Corsair Dominators, 4gb ddr2
Hard Drive: 500gig OEM Hitachi
Case: Coolermaster 690 with 8 fans
There is also a sticker on the case that says "Overclocked like a Mother!" so I would like to stop being a poser. It's embarressing when someone stops by and asks me about it...
I tried using the easy tune 6 software that came from gigabyte, which had like 6 settings and would lock up after the 1st.
So I guess I am asking the maximum pc members for some help during this time of financial crisis. (I would of had an i7)
If you need advice on ripping your dvd's to a home server and playing them in your home, I'm pretty knowledgable. I ripped all of my dvd's, without recoding with handbrake, almost identical dvd quality, and play them back on my PS3 and Dlink 520.
Any help would be appreciated...

Leaked Best Buy Memo Hints at Windows 7 Upgrade Pricing
Posted 06/07/2009 at 07:46:22pm
I am currently dual booting xp and windows 7. I don't mind window 7 at all. I like it and will use it for the 64 bit features for CS4. I hope pricing is consistent. I know people will want 7 when it is released, but remember it probably won't make a significant difference until the first service pack is released. I'm sure, however, I'll be running out for it and then come back here and whine why a program or driver doesnt work...lol!
Rumor: Comcast to Offer 100Mb Service Soon

I don't think they even know the price! Everyone I know gets different price quotes from them. After your contract agreement is up, it is standard to call and negotiate on a new price. How does the U.S. government allow this? Why do i have to call them, when my contract is up, or it will go up $200? I'm from Michigan and a good rule of thumb for down speed is to take half of what you pay for. Example, pay for 6mbs, get 3. recently I went to U-verse and i pay for the 10mbs. I get about 8 and I am pretty happy. I just don't know who would pay almost $200 for com-crap, especially with bandwidth caps.
Browser Battle: Nine Browsers of Today and Tomorrow Compared

It would be nice to see Google and Firefox get together and produce 1 super-browser. (Firechrome?) Use the Firefox add-ins and the speed of Chrome...I think Microsoft would start to sweat, if they are not already. IE is just to slow and bulky.

For $1000 you are putting in an AMD processor? Intel Quad core, go old school Q6600 with some Dominators, 4gig lat5. Get a solid $150 motherboard from gigabyte. Also case...coolermaster cm690. You can pick it up for $40 bucks after rebates and load it up with hard drives. Put in an aftermarket heat sink. Look at Tom's hardware for a good review. Get a 500 gig oem hd from newegg. I think a g-force 8800 video card for under 50 bucks would work well. You can do this for well under a grand. If you really need that extra speed, overclock the processor. Don't use the software application and do it right...in the BIOS. And go 64 bit. Forget Vista, go xp 64. You have a year for Windows 7, really until the first service pack.
Six Essential Steps to Diagnosing and Curing a Slow Startup

Don't just start shutting down services! Know what they do or at least Google them. This should have been more specific. There are sites out there (such as blackviper) that look into services. It would be nice to see maximum pc do a write up on services within a monthly issue. I don't think we need to see any more "budget" $1500 computers. Break down the services and explain what they really do.
Windows XP gets Another Stay of Execution
Posted 12/22/2008 at 03:59:28pm
Vista needs to be buried with Windows ME. I just built a system and decided to dual boot xp and Vista. I wanted to compare 64 bit vista to 32 xp pro. I've turned on vista maybe twice. Xp is much faster and performance is better. What i don't understand is how Microsoft is pushing out systems with Vista 64 bit standard! Don't get me wrong, 64 is excellent but for that standard consumer, there needs to be clairity. Running a program as simple as the Malwarebytes live protection doesn't even work and I had to search for drivers of my Linksys wireless card and a dvd burner. I also like how the anti-root kit in AVG is not available on 64 bit platforms. I only use windows because I have to teach it but Mac is the way to go!

I think windows 7 will be an awesome os. Microsoft SHOULD take into consideration all of the problems with vista and correct them...we hope. Microsoft just pushes software out too fast and does not spend enough time in the development phase. It's a love-hate relationship.
