This is No Joke: Conficker.C to Strike on April Fools' Day

Posted 03/17/2009 at 12:18:40pm

We did this to ourselves.  We can't blame Microsoft for this one.  Microsoft literally gave us the patch to stop this sorta thing in OCTOBER PEOPLE!! I don't know where, but some place said that 30% of Windows computers don't have a patch from 5 months ago.  Schools, businesses, and other places are more concerned about profit rather than the security of the people that use the computers.  I'm in a school district where if someone put a thumbdrive in with Conficker, the whole network would be set on fire.  This is why people should do their updates.  If you're too lazy, have Windows do it for you.  Conficker got this bad because we don't update as often as we should.  But 5 months behind is a little too much.  Microsoft even tells you when to put the patches on; the second Tuesday of every month.  1 day of the month is all they ask unless it's something important and because we are and always have been lazy at updates, this is exactly why it's the computer user's fault for their computers acting like crap.  That's the new focus of viruses; having us infect ourselves and stuff like Conficker, Sasser, SQLSlammer, and (insert next catastrophic virus name we got ourselves into here) is only proving we do this to ourselves.  Social engineering is the new focus and when someone comes to me infected with a virus, I'll say "You did it to yourself."

How to get the Windows 7 Public Beta

Posted 01/13/2009 at 10:40:54pm

I'm gonna spell it out to everyone.  Please ditch Windows Vista.  I used Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit for a few months and I didn't really have many issues.  But after I formatted my machine and put the Windows 7 64-bit Beta they just publicly released, I never wanna go back to Windows Vista. Everything is a positive so far, but not without some difficulties.  My Pinnacle PCTV HD PCI Card was a major improvement in Windows 7.  In Vista, I had to download TVCenterPro(a huge waste of space) to watch TV because the stuff to make it work in Vista Media Center only worked on 32-bit Vista, not 64-bit.  I used Windows Update and found the right drivers, and as soon as I opened Windows Media Center, it was able to use my TV Tuner.  My GeForce 9600GT also installed nice too from Windows Update, but normally I don't use Windows Update drivers for graphics cards since they aren't very good most of the time.  Now Nvidia made an exception and all Windows 7 drivers come from Windows Update now.  A slight challenge was actually getting online.  My Netgear WG111v2 Wireless USB Adapter didn't have digitally signed drivers.  That made no sense since Vista 64-bit needed them too and they were digitally signed in 64-bit Vista.  I guess Windows 7 actually is enforcing the rule that all device drivers must be digitally signed or they will not install on 64-bit.  Either way, I had to manually use an ethernet cable and connect to Windows Update to download the right driver for the adapter and then I was using wireless just fine.  I also found UAC isn't very picky either anymore.  On obvious things, like stuff you download from the Internet makes sense, but everyday apps really don't need it unless they need to be run with admin rights. iTunes install wasn't too bad either.  Just one prompt for the actual file and then 1 prompt when it started installing the iTunes parts, which should be a lot better than 50 million prompts on Vista.  The taskbar is amazing also and the little menus that pop out of stuff like Windows Live Messenger help things out too.  I agree with everyone when they say this is what Vista should have been.  Unfortunately, though I attempted to sway people to liking Vista (on the sole intention of it sucking was that people's system requirements were too damn low and most of them were), I have found Windows 7 much better to use.  Microsoft won't admit it, but Windows Vista will probably run out of users before Windows XP ever does.

Windows XP and Windows Vista users either need to jump over to Windows 7 or install Linux or Mac OS X.
Plain and simple.
