Maximum PC's Geek Quiz 2009
Posted 10/14/2009 at 11:55:56am
The only one I'm sorry I missed was the 4870 shader units - I missed that they were asking about the X2. It's not so much of a "geek" quiz as it is a "do you read every single article and post that MaximumPC publishes" quiz.
OCZ Adds Low-Voltage AMD Black Edition RAM to Memory Lineup

Does lower voltage mean more overclocking headroom (since you can bump up the voltage if you want to)? Or does it mean that the voltage is capped at 1.65V? This article suggests low voltage is a good thing, but that's something I"ve never really understood. What's the benefit of low voltage?
Chrysler Concept Has Built-In Computer With iPhone-Style Touchscreen

Who in their right mind thinks that a touch screen display in a car is a GOOD idea??!!?! Car controls should be tactile and so unmistakable that you should be able to set the temperature, change the radio, and adjust your seat without taking your eyes off the road. Gimme a 1950s radio with two giant knobs. Or, mount the touch screen in the passenger seat so your copilot can enjoy it (and quit playing with the sunroof!).
I like the idea of a smartphone as your key. It's a great feeling with RFID keys to just walk up to your car and have it open for you.
'Pogoplug' Device Makes Any USB Hard Drive into NAS
Posted 04/14/2009 at 05:54:28pm
This is a nice little device. I just got mine today. It's a great way to share files over a home network (wife and I have one large backup drive that we had previously needed to physically move to each computer to access it). The online interface is a bit pokey, but easy to use. And they make it very easy to share one file, or a whole folder with anyone else with an email address - kind of my own FTP server for freelance work.
As of now, no print server capability. I hope that comes soon. And expansion is possible by using a USB hub.
Getting it to look and function like a regular hard drive requires running a service in your system tray, but it works.
$800 Budget PC Buyer’s Guide -- Updated Prices and Parts For October 2008
Posted 11/04/2008 at 03:40:36pm
Would a p43 board shave off a few bucks instead of the p45? As I understand it, the memory standard is the only real difference. Since you're suggesting DDR2 800 ram anyway, you're not even maxing out the p45 board, so there's no functional difference here, you're just throwing away $25.
