Facebook Breastfeeding Kerfuffle Spreads to the Real World
Posted 01/01/2009 at 10:29:28pm
there are facebook entries about wanna-be gangsters and wanna-be criminals promoting violence, murder, "working your way up" (working your way up from what -- street scum to inmate?) in a criminal organization.
People getting killed in the streets of our cities and you've got some uptight Pat Buchanans out there getting worked up over seeing a baby's head over a female's breast!
Why aren't people getting worked up over people promoting senseless killing?
The Disk Defrag Difference
Posted 01/01/2009 at 10:21:50pm
I've seen some issues where MaximumPC has both touted it as making a HUGE difference in performance and making NO difference in performance. (Search the backissues, fellow readers and you will see why it seems Maximum PC speaks from both sides of its collective mouth about defragging).
Which is it, MaximumPC?
The last paragraph in this "review" identifies exactly what I have been talking about! MaximumPC created this article to compare 4 defraggers, presumably to see which one was most effective, then it closes with the last paragraph titled "don't waste your money or your time!" If defragging is wasting your time for negligible gains in performance, why run the comparison at all? Are we comparing the slowest of the economy cars here or what, and if so, what's the point of such a comparison?
Windows XP gets Another Stay of Execution
Posted 12/26/2008 at 12:18:26pm
Sure if you like having spotty software and driver support, a maddening array of kernel, desktop, and distro combinations multiplied by the myriad questions of interoperability. Then there's the cryptic command line interface that only a software engineer could love.
Need help? Try calling the bearded Linux guy in his basement at 2 AM. Hope you have his cellphone number on speed dial.
Windows XP gets Another Stay of Execution

Vista 32-bit can't address all 4 Gb either. Then there's the same lack of driver and software support for Vista 64 bit.
Vista is every bit as buggy as XP. Anybody remember when MS inadvertently disconnected thousands of Vista users with a buggy patch? Oops! Whoever says Vista is bug free either hasn't used it, isn't dealing with reality, or has a very short memory.

Get in line behind Rambus, Monster Cable, and Xerox (remember when they tried to trademark the word xerox when used to describe the act of photocopying). Can you say "snowballs chance in hell?"

"Dude, You're Getting a Dell" with Windows XP, for How Much?
Posted 12/11/2008 at 06:28:00pm
Linux is not the answer for Joe Blow computer user. Which Desktop? Which Distro? Which Kernel?
Linux is NOT the universal replacement for Windows. Linux has been threatening to take over the desktop world for 20 years. Watching them try has been like watching the New Orleans Saints attempt to reach the Superbowl every year.
Linux is still pretty much of a niche operating system, especially compared with the installed base for Windows XP, Windows Vista, or even Apple's OS X, which is growing at a faster adoption rate than EITHER Windows or Linux.
Until Linux users realize that non-technical users shouldn't need a software engineering degree to put Linux on a computer (including Laptop), Linux will remain but a tiny fraction of the total installed user base worldwide.
The world has been waiting for Linux to mature since 1992. I hope the world brought some reading material while they wait. It's going to be quite a while longer.

Goodbye Dell -- hello Dell competitor. Teach Dell why it's called a free enterprise system.
