Storage Vendors Agree to 128-bit Disk Encryption Standards for SSDs and HDDs

Posted 02/01/2009 at 11:16:24pm

128 bit encryption is insanely week (along the lines of SSL/TLS).  I'll still be running application level encryption along side my meager 128 bit drive encryption.

FSF to Cisco: It's Time to get Sued!

Posted 02/01/2009 at 10:20:38pm

This is a rather sticky situation in that

  1. Cisco didn't violate the license, Linksys did prior to being consumed by Cisco
  2. There is no more Linksys to sue
  3. "All profits" is an exorbitant amount to ask for, but there's no reasonable way to determine how much is reasonable.
in credit to cisco, they now only market a small number of devices using Linux, namely the L serries (wrt54gL, etc..).  The rest of their devices now run the proprietary cisco ios or the vxworks embedded OS.  It's a nightmare for home users, but it does get them "off the hook" moving forward.  It doesn't excuse what Linksys did however.  Who should pay and how much is a decision for a judge (and jury?) to decide.

SKUs Galore for Windows 7 - Leaked Screenshot Reveals Multi-Edition Design (again!)

Posted 02/01/2009 at 08:58:59pm

There should be exactly 3 editions, Windows Basic, Windows (Premium/Professional)(which should combine home premium and basic functionality, similar to windows XP PRO) and an Ultimate, which should include absolutely everything with no exceptions.

While I'm on the subject, windows server licensing is rediculous.  Having multiple editions of an operating system is rediculous.  Offer one (count them, one) base operating system, and then add premium/professional/server functionality as a one-time add on purchase.

AT&T Wireless Says it Will Ban P2P Users

Posted 02/01/2009 at 08:52:45pm

Read the article closely.  this is referring to AT&T Wireless. If you've ever been on a wireless network with even one person using bittorrent to download from a moderate sized swarm, you know how crippling that can become as the frequent transfers and numerous connections saturate the available bandwidth. A single download can cripple every client connected to a given access point. It's not like at home where a reasonable download will not adversely affect other users.

Microsoft Could Lose up to 8.5 Billion in “Vista Capable” Lawsuit

Posted 02/01/2009 at 08:46:05pm

Regardless of the fact that the lack of aero doesn't "cripple" the OS, it is an advertised feature, and one the plaintiffs in this case expected to be included in a "vista capable" system.  If the system isn't capable of running every feature of the operating system, that should be made aboundantly clear before the point of sale.
