D-Link DGL-4500 Xtreme N Gaming Router

Posted 06/25/2009 at 07:52:59pm

I'm a cheap bastard, as I'm still paying for mistakes I made when I was younger.  My DGL-4300 died on me after about 3 years of good solid service.  Just on a whim, not really able to afford one, I did a google search for Site:craigslist.org DGL-4500.  I found one for $70 and they shipped it to me!

I flashed to the newest firmware, 1.21 & d/led the newest shareport.  It's way cool, I have a flashdrive, a printer, and a portable HDD all on a cheap $10 usb hub.  It works GREAT w/ all of it!

Oh, and I play TF2 tons, and my laptop gets the best reception I've ever had!

Wholly crap is it fast.  Core i7 6G of ram, and this thing smOkes!  I have a crappy video card, so framrates aren't allways great, but i can swap between WoW, TF2, and whatever w/ a simple alt tab, and the delay is in my monitor relay switching, nothing else!

*Note, I got the core I7 and vista cause I know peeps and this is why I still have an 8800gts and not an evga 260.

Vista SP Freeing Up Big Disk Space For Some

Posted 06/08/2009 at 04:38:42pm

System restore points in Vista are HUGE, as it also backs up files and things that xp sys restore didn't do.  It's close to a snapshot.  That's why you gain space (tons at first) then it slowly decays away.  That space is just going to new restore points.

a security system monitor & productivity.  While I applaud a 2ms response time, I don' know that the hight resolution is appropriate for a gamer.  It's not for me anyway I'd need 1024 MINIMUM, but would prefer 1536.

Like my 21" SGI.  it supports a resolution of 2048x1536.  On a white screen (like google's page)you can notice the 3 horizontal lines.  They are thin, about 1/2 a pixel or so.  On anything even somewhat "normal" for videogames you'll never know they are there.  I'm  very sensitive to "optical defects"  which is why I still use a 75lb  CRT monitor, and I never have an issue with those lines, you don't see them when the screen is up.   My only issue is framerate, need to upgrade my 8800gts!

Anyone got an upgrade in the Oly, WA area?

Gelid Releases New Thermal Compound in Bigger Tube

Posted 05/29/2009 at 05:17:22pm

It matters a ton when a few degrees matter.  Recently I had gotten a core i7.  (TY JAY!)  I had the stock HSF, scraped the crap off, smothed it down, and applied ceramique I had from like a 5 yr old tube.  crazy temps.  Idling in the 50's... load temps were... KickASS if you needed to fry something, but otherwise not so cool.  Switched to AS5 and I took 10 degrees of the top of idle, and dropped my load temps to the low 70's.  (stock HSF)

Now the stock HSF for core i7 blows, so I'm looking at getting a new one, probably a zalman cnps9900 (I think thats the model?) but I gotta score some dough from a few computer clients first.

Performance ROCKS.

I can't say the same for stabillity.  The chipset runs as hot as the CPU and i920's aren't cool.  I think they sit around 50/54 cpu/chipset idle and ~ 75/66 load.  I've not needed a new case in years, but I may try a new case to help eliminate heat.  It doesn't help that the chipset sits directly under the videocard.

I have to say one thing though, the system as a whole is friggin fast!

OMG!

I am so glad I grabbed the titan pack from them today!

Seriously, these guys have been KICK ASS for longer than CounterStrike.  I loved that they had reasonable speeds, and moderate adds.  It's a shame that a certain mirror who makes you sign up, then hounds you to pay more to not wait in line, while wait times are avg. 20 min.... isn't going under.

Microsoft Sidewinder X8 Mouse -- Unboxing and Hands-on Impressions

Posted 02/24/2009 at 06:52:16pm

O.K.  I am a mouse whore, I admit it.  Moreover, I am a whore for mice w/ many buttons in comfortable spots.

I was pissed to find out that the Logitech MX1000 was being tossed asside. I went out and bought gaming mice at best buy.  Mice is correct there, because I bought a g5, and a sidewinder, and a couple other mice (a Razor, and something else that sucked).   I liked the Sidewidner, and loved the "auto flip"  and the dpi on the fly switching, but it's lack of buttons frustrated me, and I couldn't configure it to work the way I wanted w/o losing some features.  It was big, but perfect for me cause I have big hands. I continued trying them all and returned the ones I didn't like, which ended up being all of them.  I had become too acustomed to the luxury of multiple mouse buttons.

Then I found and fel in love w/ the MX Revolution.  It has more buttons than anyone knows what to do with (except me).  The only thing the revolution lacks is DPI switching, and the "middle" button on the second scroll wheel needs to be a little "firmer."  otherwise it's perfect...  it gets a 9/10 kick ass awarded by me.

My real issue is that not only can I ROCK UT3 (though it'd be even better w/ a sidewinder), but I Play WoW also.  It's extremely frustrating because a sidewinder would be so much fun for TF2, but I can't use it at all for WoW, it's missing the buttons necessary to bind actions to.  I had to settle for the mouse that would get the better share of my game time, and so far the MX Revolution does not dissapoint.

How many buttons?  I'm dying to know!

I WANT A MOUSE THAT KICKS ASS for both MMO AND FPS GAMES!!!  The 2 I see on newegg, that might be better have crappy reviews.

So, I'll play w/ a revolution until something truly revolutionary pipes my tune and makes my $ follow a different mouse.
