Chrome Market Share Leapfrogs Opera on Day 1

Posted 09/05/2008 at 03:13:33pm

Passing a Kia Sephia over a mountain pass.  Come on  people.  A kid on a skateboard can do that w/ a few good kicks behind a semi.  I don't know 1 person who uses Opera.  NOT 1.  I just surveyed all my co workers.  more than 1/2 don't even know that there is more than IE.  These are college educated folk too!

It's just a proof of concept.  No matter what google does, people will try it out.  How better to find out what the market wants than releasing a free beta that is guaranteed to get a mil or two dls?  Hell even MS had a following like that once.  It sure doesn't mean they are sticking w/ it.  It's way to early to tell whether the chrome will stay around or if it's just cheap paint on a plastic toy.

Is a 5GB Bandwidth Cap Enough?

Posted 08/27/2008 at 12:57:47pm

That's just it. when you combine the usage that's where it gets crazy.  1Mil txt based e-mails in a month no one uses that right?  Most e-mail these days though is Rich or HTML still not big, till you add an image or two, or god forbid send an attachment.  Of those How many of those have adds attached.  (not us MPC users, but the general publick) Work e-mails can be large, I routinely get them w/ multi Mb attachements.   Hope your not logging in to that e-mail via remote access!  Then what about 1 legit movie or a couple of training videos?  an episode of free lost from nbc.com, a 100 mp3's, a winxp / vista  service pack, drivers for an HP printer (why are they so big?), drivers for all your hardware (you update every week right?) a game + online game time,  clicking refresh on MPC 20 times a day and slashdot on infinite refresh every 30 seconds and finally top that off w/ remoting in to your mom's machine to fix whatever crapware she downloaded today.

My point is that this seems like typical usage for the young public right now (Replace /. w/ myspace).  Combine that w/ more than one person in a house hold doing this at the same time.

It doesn't take a genius to see how that cap is a little on the low side.  I don't want the ISPs to know this but I think 15G is a pretty fair cap (for today, not tomorrow!), but they will have to start raising caps yearly as usage goes up or they'll just be funeling money until we go back to the BBS and local network route.  I'm sure I won't be the first to string a touch of fiber under I-5 to connect me to my friends house...

Researchers Discover 673 Million Browser Users at High Risk of Attack

Posted 07/02/2008 at 12:42:09pm

It's quite simple actually, my company enforces it.  I have to use I.E. 6.x.  I use 7 @ home, but I am not happy about it.  Neither firefox nor 7 give me what I had in 6.  (the abililty to move the links bar to the bottom, and launch *.exe from said links bar.)

If some MaximumPC god of knowledge 1. knows what I am talking about, and 2. Knows how I can get that functionality back, I'd donate a beer or two for such knowledge.

ATI to Nvidia: You're a Dinosaur

Posted 06/25/2008 at 01:20:28pm

I am glad that they will be able to compete again.  I hope that they are secretly building a megafast top end card, just waiting for Nvidia to roll out one more geforce XXX so they can drop the bomb.

Price /performance is what matters to all but the affluent.  Why sport extra heat in your case when most of the time good enough will do?  I personally don't want to apply Degree to my case to keep it from perspiring, especially with warmer weather coming up (here in some parts, but not where I am at).

For those of us who do the best we can with what we got, this sounds like the perfect upgrade and right price to anyone who has a 1 1/2 year old & older videocard, yet wants to play modern games.

It's my turn to SHOUT! I HAVE A BORING ASS LIFE, AND THE ONLY EXCITEMENT I GET IS FROM THE MPC PODCAST. O.K. well, my life's not even close to boring but the truth is that I do really enjoy the podcast. It aids on the bike ride home from work, the long car trip, the craptastic comercials of FM radio, etc... I even took to Steam, picked up Orangebox so I could play TF2. P.S. TF2 feels like I am playing in SLOW MOTION after playing UT3 & Crysis for so long. (I read MPC, it's obviously NOT the framerate...) So even if you guys are not doing the podcast anymore, could you at least let us know, and why? Let me switch my devotion to another PC Mag if you must... but don't just leave us hanging like heroin junkies who just had the price of our favorite smack trippled like a gallon of gasoline! On that note, skipping the podcast won't do much to lessen our dependance on foreign oil, if that were the reason you skipped a few weeks. If it's a "side issue" kind of thing as the poster above mentioned, charge for it! I'll pay 50 Cent per week to hear a decent podcast! Do you take Paypal? Lastly, um can I have a free soundcard... (j/k) Oh wait, you just posted one. NVM, (except I would pay for it...) Thanks guys!!!! MPC set us up the bomb! THERE ARE ONLY 11 TYPES OF PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD. If this company manages to actually sell more than 10000 of these I'll buy a lifetime subscription. However I think that somehow they will delay again, and then for a promised november "christmas time" release, which they fail to meet, and finally fold to the feds. But if it doesn't happen, then I'll take that keyboard, and continue to use my MX1000 the best mouse I have ever tried! If only I could rig up something like this for my G15... They are just capitalizing on their popularity. This "service" is the same as myspace, flicker, photobucket, picassa, etc.. It sure as hell doesn't come close to replacing my pira er uhm... Evaluation copy of Adobe's fantastic image editing software. I honestly hope they do somehow recieve something for this effort, I was just sad when they called it photoshop, it should have been "Adobe's online version of Picassa" or something.
