No BS Podcast #74 The Summer in the City Edition

I'm assuming you have only that one CD drive on the IDE channel. Set the jumper to master. It will be the master on that IDE channel, not anywhere else. Usually if its the only drive, cable select should work, but setting it to master should do the trick. Cable select is very finicky so just putting it on master should fix the problem. The IDE / SATA drives don't talk to eachother so having both of them connected at the same time shouldn't be an issue.

A New Kind of Radio

I really like the concept they have going on here. The only thing that would keep me from buying this is I'm betting the battery life is crap while monitoring stations and I'm not paying money to listen to ads. Has anyone seen any other software that can do things similar to this? It would be cool if there was a program that could sync up your MP3 player to Rhapsody / Itunes etc and go out and find new songs based on your tastes. It would be basically the same thing as this but more palatable.
It's TV! It's Internet! It Works!

It has commercials just like TV. It's quality is nothing compared to TV. It's nice but hey if I want to watch TV, I'll watch TV. I DVR most of my shows to avoid the commercials; you can't skip them with this... yet.

Any word on DX10 content? It would be cool to put the 8800s to work. Been using it since day one and damn has it been buggy and crashy. I hope this update fixes it.
On Verdict Scales
Posted 05/23/2007 at 03:34:35pm
I think the 1-10 scale is fine. However you need to have a clear, precise explanation of the scale. You can generalize four subsections of the 1-10 scale. (IMO)
1-3 (Don't bother) 1 - Causes harm to the user 2 - Is completely non-functional with the possibility to cause harm 3 - Is completely non-functional
4-6 (Mediocre) 4 - Does one thing well and the rest poor 5 - Does most thing well 6 - Does what it claims to do and nothing more
7-9 (Excellent) 7 - Fills all claims and does it well 8 - Performs same features as competitor but does it with class 9 - Hands down better than any other product in its class
10 - Borg perfection
I think if the scale is well defined and easily accessible there won't be any complaining or second-guessing a verdict. The 1-5 scale gives less flexibility. You may as well use a 1-4 scale based on the 4 sections defined here.
To add in spice to the scale you can throw a Kick-Ass verdict at it as well. I really like the variety of the 1-10. The 1-5 is nice but this is Maximum PC; MORE IS BETTER!
Lost Planet DX9 vs DX10
Posted 05/17/2007 at 10:34:39am
Thanks for the more informative bench this time around! It looks like anything less than an 8800GTX just wouldn't cut it. I'm going to wait for the next gen of cards before I sink my dollars. They sure make good DX9 cards, but that's not what I'm looking for. It's looking like current 8800 owners will want to upgrade once the next gen comes or run SLI. I wonder if this game just isn't optimized or this is what we can expect from upcoming DX10 releases.
Dear lord that’s a lot of snow

How about a test with settings not maxed out or at a lower resolution? I could see if you tested with SLI at that resolution but this test is not realistic. Someone with 1x8800 would not be running at such a high resolution and expect good framerates. I'd like to see 1280x1024 / 1600x1200 with max settings / lowered settings; single card and SLI. Where is the sweet spot? How do the budget DX10 cards rack up? Is anything less than an 8800 GTX worthwhile? I want to know how "good" these 8800 cards are in the real-world. Should we hold out for the next gen to get decent framerates or is it alright to pick them up now and expect 40+fps @ 1600x1200? It looks nice and all but I want some real data.
Stay off my computer/console, you!
Posted 04/17/2007 at 10:29:08pm
I will agree with you that Consoles are not the proper platform for RTS, FPS and MMO. I will however not agree that they should stop porting games to the PC. You need to look at it as what it is. Ports are good; crappy ports are bad! There is a huge difference between a good port and a crappy port of a game. Good ports take advantage of the KB/mouse combo whilst crappy ones retain all of the console style menus. Some games don't even give mouse use as an option which is hell IMO.
Sports games are fine on the PC, IF you use a controller. Flying/Racing games are super on the PC, IF you use a controller. The 360 controller is perfect for these types of games. Those more hardcore into the genres can always pickup a yoke, joystick and throttle for flying or a wheel / pedal set for driving. Nobody in their right mind will use WASD for flying / driving games. Those that do and get a bad taste in their mouth only have themselves to blame. The variety of PC peripherals is exponential compared to the bland scene of console gaming.
Pickup some more peripherals and play your flight sims, racing games and sports games again and write another article. I'm betting you will find answers by doing so.
While I will agree to an extent that ports can be bad, they aren't bad if done properly. I will agree that party games are not for the PC. I just couldn't see playing mario party in front of my PC with 3 other friends. Thats the console scene and I'm totally OK with that.
Please take another good, hard, look; you may like what you see.
