Comcast to Offer Bandwidth Usage Monitor
Posted 12/04/2008 at 10:30:31am
Boy, I'm glad I moved! I had Comcast for 4 years the Speed was good, but
it's expensive! And their Customer service SUCKS! Now they want to Screw users
into submission!
I thought that the days of the metered usage died with Dialup, but I guess
an old trick is the best when you don't want to spend capital on infrastructure.
I understand them wanting to limit the illegal p2p users (I also know that not
all p2p is illegal, I use it myself from time to time). But smacking a
limit on all users, just as digital delivery is taking hold with the masses,
and VoIP has left the office to come home with the average Joe is just
backwards! To think that a "usage meter" is going to make it all
better is even sillier! I agree that an .EXE just shows you how backwards this
company has it, show me an average house hold that has only one Device on the
internet... Most have 2 or 4 (mom/dad's work laptop, the Family's PC, little
Johny's Xbox/Wii/PS3, the Netflix’s box) So unless that little .exe connects
back to a central server (and using some of that bandwidth that they've
limited) to pull up a report how's it going to track the usage accurately.
It time for the US ISP to get their heads out of the sand and catch backup
with the World leaders in high speed internet and forget the usage Caps!

Moving the Electronics to an external box is a great Idea...
I mean really how many of us don't already have a pile of electronics gear we've got to put into a cabinet or close? One more peice is no big deal, exspecialy with the added bonus of a super slim display wall mounted !!!
Can you say floor space :)
U.S. Coastline Threatened by E-Waste Menace

Weather from the 80's or earlier, it wouldn't matter. Many of the older ships use lead alloy bearings, or lead as ballast, add that to all the copper (yes copper can be a hazard, it kills many types of algae , and other microbes, also in some forms is considered a heavy metal (think lead, cadmium, etc)) and oils onboard you still have issues.
Hands-on with Microsoft's SideWinder X8 Mouse (w/ BlueTrack)

It's nice to see they went with a Standard AA, So it's easly swapped out at a LAN, if the NiMH gives out before you do :)
I'm a fan of the bigger mice so yeepy for it's size! They really need to switch out the Red LEDs for blue, or make them changeable (through software) oh well, it's an easy mod :)
The Legality of Open Wi-Fi

I'm of the school where if your packets are accepted, and you didn't dishonestly present your self to the AP (IE mac spoof..etc) then it's cool. Why, well there are allot of places where you maybe inadvertently on someone else's network (big issue in apartments)your card picks the fastest one with the best signal. Not a big deal.. In my mind it's like a large lawn clock..I paid for it, it's on my land, and I own it...but if you can see it from your place across the street, or driving by you shouldn't be arrested for looking at it or using it to set your watch. I can see some points to laws against it but really. Unless your using it with the intent to commit a crime while using it (computer or other) What's the problem?
How To: Detect a Faulty Hard Drive and Recover Data
Posted 08/16/2007 at 04:19:25pm
When the drive just dies (no nose or odd sounds) It normally is due to the controller board failing (it's that little circuit board on the back of the drive. Only way to fix it is to replace the board. You can pull the board from a working drive but you have to make sure that they are the same rev. This also will involve some soldering... and should only be done as a last resort. Nice article good advice!! CrazyBillyBob
