Heal and Inoculate Your PC

Registered Linux User #404122 Microsoft has encountered a critical system error and must now shut down. Better get Bill Gate$ on the phone for this one.......

Another good resource is an online virus scanner.
I occasionally use Trend Micro's free online scanner called HouseCall.
It can remove any threats that my anti vrius scanner doesn't detect...and has helped me out of many a jam.

My current computer is a Hewlett Packard 2.8 ghz computer.
I dual boot with a Debian variant Sidux on one side...Windows XP on the other.
My pc comes equipped with onboard video memory...which you HAVE to keep activated in order to install linux on this computer. When installing...I have to dedicate at least 32 mb of video memory...even  though I have a ATI Radeon X1300 graphics card installed.
You'll want to boot up in video safe mode....otherwise you'd have top hit ctrl/alt f2 or f3 and edit your xorg.conf file as such

sudo apt-get install nano
sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

scroll down the list until you see what driver is listed.

On my computer...it would list Driver="Intel810"

I change it to Driver="vesa".....hit ctrl O to save the change I just made....then ctrl X to exit.
Type exit to exit sudo....then type start x.
If the problem is in your video....your linux distro should boot.

After your linux has booted...dtermine WHICHdriver you will need...and holler back.

I have run Vista on a Pentium 3 933 mhz Hewlett Packard with 512 megs of memory. Granted there was no schnazzy 3d Aero display...but it ran capably. If I can do it on a PENTIUM 3 computer...why can't someone run it on oh say a Pentium 4 1.8 ghz processor with at least a gig of memory??

DIY: Build Linux From Scratch

Posted 03/22/2008 at 01:39:11pm

Registered Linux User #404122 Microsoft has encountered a critical system error and must now shut down. Better get Bill Gate$ on the phone for this one....... Howdy, and welcome to linux. You should understand that there IS a learning curve...but if you are willing to put in a little time...you will discover for yourself how rewarding Linux is. First...as a new user...I would NOT recommend Linx From Scratch. I consider myself an intermediate user...I can solve most of my own problems...and even I am not ready for Linux From Scratch LOL A good learning distro would be something like Linspire/Freespire, Ubuntu, or Xandros. All four are user friendly...and Ubuntu and Xandros both grow with your level of expertise...and also interestingly enough...all four are ultimately based upon Debian. If you'd like to learn the basics...get a book by Rickford Grant 'Ubuntu Linux for Non-geeks'. The distro he uses may be dated (6.06) but it will also work with 7.04, 7.10, and 8.04. Best of luck to you...and if you have a question...go to the Maximumpc Alt/os forums to voice your questions. I promise you...no one will tell you to RTFM. Glenn Condrey

Daily News Brief: Microsoft Offers $44.6 BILLION for Yahoo

On the plus side...M$ would get rid of the annoying spam bots...but it would continue a legacy of monopolistic practices by M$.

Do Higher MP3 Bit Rates Pay Off?

A very nice demonstration of what I already knew. I have a friend who claims he 'can tell' when he hears an mp3...at ANY bitrate. As a former disc jockey for 2 1/2 years...what many folks do not know...is that music you hear overnights or a lot of programs...is now in mp3 format. Nicely done. A few months ago...I voiced my displeasure that MaximumPC wasn't doing enough for some of its readers, in that not everyone could afford to drop the kind of money to build a DECENT gaming computer. You folks have taken that to heart...and given people options as far as attempting to build cheaper rigs...and in that I give you many kudos. Tell me gentlemen...how about ordering some parts from eBay next time?? Glenn Condrey

OpenSUSE 10.3 Test Drive

Registered Linux User #404122 Microsoft has encountered a critical system error and must now shut down. Better get Bill Gate$ on the phone for this one....... I'd like to add my voice to express disappointmentover the new openSuse release. I've tried a LOT of linux distros thru the years...I started with Xandros...would see a nice looking distro release...and install it over my Xandros partition. Later I'd figure it out on my own that it was crap...and have to reinstall Xandros. OpenSuse is a good distro...it just doesn't have that OOMPH or WOW factor that Ubuntu or Debian seem to have captured in the last few months/years. I really don't like the look of its Gnome desktop...it was kind of difficult to install (and I consider myself something of a expert when it comes to installing a distro...I have used linux for several years now) Upon installation..I discovered that my NTLDR file on my windows drive had been wiped out. Geez..thanks Suse! Back to the ole drawing board Novell! Glenn Condrey

I always install the User-Agent Switcher. That way whenever I encounter a page that insists on you viewing it in Internet Explorer...I am like a boy-scout...always prepared. I also like having Fore-cast Fox installed. Can't plan a picnic without knowing what the weather is going to be. I also use Media Connectivity plug-in. A useful ap for configuring which of your media players will handle a streaming media etc etc. Finally...if you like texting...but you're outta minutes...try using WataCrackaz AutoSMS. All you need to know is the number and the service that your textee subscribes to. Its free to text...altho a bit more pricey to recieve that text. )My service with Cingular charges 20cents for a text with it( Glenn Condrey
