Is Linux Its Own Worst Enemy?

Posted 10/17/2009 at 07:49:53pm

That any comments made by individuals [pleading] to give Linux a chance on the desktop as a replacement for desktop operating systems do not have your support because, as you admit, it is a hobbyist enterprise and could not rightly be viewed as a general purpose operating environment. Only those who have the knowledge, the time to spare and the will to follow through to completion should offer to help.

Murphy's Law: Sometimes, an Open-Source Virus is Just a Virus

I agree with other posters that this article is just a semantic shell game of no real substance. Malware is code that installs itself without your permission. Licensing is installing code with someone else's permission because you agree to their constraints. As far as I'm concerned, malware has always been license free because no one claims ownership of the result and lives to tell the tale. Unless you are open about it.

If you are in sympathy with OnlineNIC, I suggest a donation via PayPal. They'll need your support.

Windows 7 Review: XP vs Vista vs 7 in 80+ Benchmarks

Posted 08/12/2009 at 06:43:06am

Backward compatibility with previous versions of Windows is key to the continuing acceptance of the OS as the benchmark by which all others are measured. That MS was able to accomplish this while at the same time completely rewriting the core components to accomodate demands from hardware, security and operability, is no mean feat.

I can only imagine how much more impressive the performance of Windows would be if Microsoft was able to discard all code present to allow backwards compatibility.

But then, isn't that the reason they've included Virtualization for some levels of the product? Microsoft has always been sneaking in changes into the OS by first giving it to "lesser" products so that the end user could get used to the idea before it actually makes it into the flagship product. The Ribbon interface comes to mind, first seen in Office 2007.

Microsoft has already started modularizing the kernel with Vista and continued this process with Windows 7. There will come a time when the core OS will no longer be backwards compatible with previous versions. The end result will be an OS with better performance for a much smaller group of programs.

However, with families having so little to do with each other because of other commitments or downright dysfunction, it is sometimes helpful to have someone from outside put the issue on the table from another perspective. This is simply using another means to highlight the issue; in case you weren't paying attention at home perhaps outside media could be useful.
