I spend most of my day reading text on the screen.  What parts of the display test directly address text quality clarity and sharpness?

You can easily encode to AAC with dbpoweramp. It's not free, but is an excellent tool and very affordable ($24 I think).

I don't know if Qtrax music will be drm free or not, but SpiralFrog.com has already been through this with DRM. I'm not sure if they've been very successful.
