Build a Kick-Ass $500 Gaming PC, Play Crysis at 40FPS!

Posted 04/22/2009 at 08:17:53pm

I know the title of the magazine is "MaximumPC," but I LOVE it when you remember the rest of hacks out in the "real" world. It's why I cancelled most other comptuer magazine subscriptions in favor of yours, you remember that a) not everyone is a gamer and b) not everyone is working on state-of-the-art equipment. I can no longer count the number of machines I've built either from scratch or hobbled together from "still good enough" pieces of other computers. Or, as many have already mentioned, using a nice case and PSU over and over again.

While I thought the cardboard box case was a bit over the top, it cracked me up at the time.

Windows 7: More Secure, Less Annoying

Who decides what is "unlicensed" or "unauthorized" software? Microsoft? Sounds like a lovely program for malware prevention, but it also sounds like lots of fringe programs (read: open source) will have to get some sort of Microsoft approval to run. I guess, if you can't monopolize all the software on my computer, you can at least force approval of it.

Daily News Brief: Creative Publicly Denounces Modder & Sparks Internet Backlash

Posted 04/04/2008 at 07:16:24am

So, Creative chose not to update drivers for older equipment to work with a newer OS? Certainly their choice. An admittedly boneheaded decision, but how is this different from when XP first came out and we needed to buy new printers or new versions of software to maintain functionality? Here's what I don't understand, if Creative has chosen NOT to update drivers of old equipment, haven't they basically abandoned that equipment? And if it's abandoned, why do they care what someone else does with it, aside from the burden of competing against themselves? Surely Creative has the programmer expertise, knowledge, and resources to write their own drivers, they simply have chosen not to do so. (Idiots.) Meanwhile, here's my suggestion for Creative: offer a newer card with better features and better drivers at a better price. Us Techheads always want "better/faster," not "newer/shiney-er." If Creative truly wants to make those older cards obsolete, then give us something so much better we'd all feel stupid keeping the old card. Look! A distraction!
